tracker 3 speed auto long distance trips???
« on: October 16, 2010, 07:19:17 AM »
hows it going everyone, the guy i bought my tracker off of said he drove it from NJ to FL and it was to much for the transmission to handle, he had the transmission rebuilt from a local shop in the area, the transmission had 150k on it when it ended up giving out, every since iv had it the transmission shifts just as fine as a brand new car as it should since it has around 5k on it since he had it rebuilt, every since he said this to me iv been worried about taking it on long distances iv tried searching for post on this but i cant find a thing, iv read all good things on the GM hydro transmission that comes in the trackers, how have your 3 speed transmission held up? long distance or mileage wise?

Mine has never been out of the truck, almost 300,000 miles, the last
50K have been behind a turbo engine, at about 150 HP, and pulling
33" tires, I drove it to Moab, and have taken plenty of long trips, it's
as solid as it can be.

I keep putting fluid in it because it always has lost fluid, not a drip, but
a mist while driving, so keep it full, mine likes to be over full by about 1
quart, I don't know why, but it seems to happier when I'm on steep
stuff off road.

I did add a slick 50 auto trans treatment at 70K miles when I first changed
the fluid, and I think I would add a Lucas trans treatment just for good measure

Ditto for me,  turbocharged motor in front of auto trans on my Tracker, works fine at 115k. Last long trip was NJ to NM, AZ, UT, CO, and back, over 6k total, in a month. no issues. They're good tranny's. I don't know what he did to his, but it wasn't typical.

Hi there  I am building up the courage to take out the transfer case from my 95  4door auto sidekick.  The Chilton manual says that it is part of the automatic or standard tranny and they should come out together, the Haynes manual suggests that the t/case can be removed on its own but I am having problems understanding exactly what to do.  I have a t/case out of a 96 kick and have taking it apart a number of times to understand it.   Can I do this without removing the tranny.  It appears that the top bolt would be difficult to get at.

I have taken my TC out a couple of times, twice with a 5 spd manual, and now with a 5 spd auto.  You can get the top bolt with a long extension and universal, or remove the shift linkage and just reach through the hole.  My 5 spd auto back mount is on the tranny, which is longer than the 3 spd auto, so you may have to support the tranny with jack while TC is out.  The TC's are the same, auto or manual, until you get into the electric shifts.
