New Zuk owner, Tons of questions!
« on: August 07, 2010, 10:24:17 PM »
Howdi all,

Thought I'd start a thread, introduce myself and have an open discussion for some of my thoughts, plans and issues with my Samurai.

I live in the great white canadian north, and i own a 86 Samurai, just bought it a few months ago (pics to follow)

I am having some concerns and thoughts and want everyones opinions. I've done lots of searching on here and read a few topics, not to mention downloaded the service manual.

ISSUE 1
I'm having some issues with the idle, I beleive since im canadian that i have the aisan carb. When i start the truck, the idle is low, and i have to feather the gas for a bit until it warms up or else it will stall out, then when its warm it seems to idle high. And just recently im having an issue that as soon as i turn on the headlights or the heater, the Idle goes through the roof, assuming its up around 3500 or so!

I realize that there are 2 seperate adjustments for the cold idle, and then warm idle.. and a seperate "accesory plunger" that kicks in when the alternator is under load.  Now what im looking for is a definitive answer on how to PROPERLY adjust the cold idle, the warm idle and fix my high idle issue when i turn on my lights.

ISSUE 2

Lift kits. Ill keep this plain and simple. Im thinking CALMINI and its either going to be 3.5" or 5". We have a total of 15kms of paved road up here and a max speed limit of 50kms/hour so offroad capability is paramount to speed and driveability. Thoughts?

ISSUE 3

Depending on what to do with my idle issues.. I was thinking of upgrading to a weber.. but also seriously considering a motor swap with EFI. Is there a company that makes a conversion harness because i hate WIRING.

What are the best engines to go with.. i was thinking along the lines of a 1.6 EFI from a tracker, or a V6 Vitara engine, is there any resources out there that offers a step by step along with a list of parts as im failrly novice, done a few swaps on honda cars, but never on the zuk.

Thanks for the help and info, back into the FMS i go to read some more :)

Cheerio!

It is pretty difficult to find documentation on the Asin Carburetor so I don't have an answer on that.  Perhaps a carb guru might chime in with some generalized advice.

There is a company in your neck of the woods called Breeze Industries who have a very nice Spring Over conversion kit.  It gives you a solid 4.5 inches of lift.  Just add brake line extensions, two slipyokes (better than spacers!) some shocks, weld-on front lower shock mounts and a rear upper shock mount bar.  They also sell a decent Draglink that matches the lift but it will not cure any bumpsteer that develops. It's difficult to say mean things about Calmini, but for what you are looking for, Breeze will be better - and it's Canadian!

I have a Weber DGAV32-36 on my 1.6 8-valve and it works mainly because it was prepared by the Best Weber vendor around at the time. Unfortunately, he isn't in the business anymore.  That said, your best bet on a replacement Carb system would be the MY-Side sold by Zuks Offroad (http://www.zuksoffroad.com/).  You will need to provide a Harley-style 40mm sidedraft carb although ZOR also sell them too. Myron at ZOR  provides top-notch service before and after the sale, too!

Several vendors offer remanufactured wiring harnesses for 1.6 8-valve FI and I also think for the 16-valve, too. Aftermarket4x4 and Trailtough come to mind.  There is also a harness document at Ack's FAQ created by warbird that might be useful if you know of anyone local who could build a harness.  Do a search for harness (see signature, below for link) for that docuument and other related articles on 1.6 wiring harnesses.

I hope that this helps!

Issue 1 and 3 - can be solved with a motor swap. The 1.6 16v is a huge improvement... not sure if you have any smog or emissions requirements up there. A few kits for the engine swap that come to mind are Petroworks and Trail Tough. My 1987 has the Petroworks swap with power steering and ac but both are great companies with great products and great customer service.

Issue 2 - Trail Tough YJ kit.... nice ride both on and off road.
Kit here : http://www.trailtough.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=36&category_id=7&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=53
Install instructions here : http://www.zukiworld.com/month_050104/feature_trailtough_yjlift_install.htm

Do some research to form your own opinions on CalMini before you order just so you are informed about them. Also if you come across a company called RRO (rocky road offroad) do some research on them too...

I have a spare 1.6 8 valve TBI manifold and throttle body if your looking to go that route. You'd still need the harness and the computor though.
