New too the forum and suzuki. Needing advice.
« on: August 20, 2015, 10:18:17 AM »
Hey all.
I've waited a long time and searched high and low for a clean square body tracker/sidekick. Not easy to find in my area living in the rust belt. (NEO) I finally picked up a 96 tracker 4 door 1.6 4X4 automatic. It is in really really REALLY nice shape. I'm having two issues with it. 1st issue is I have no tail lights parking lights or dash illumination... Basically everything that should come on with the switch on the first position. I have checked and double checked all fuses. 2nd issue is the transmission will not shift itself... I have to start off in "L" and shift up as I drive. Also no overdrive. From what I've read the trans in these is computer controlled and the module is located near the fuse panel? Well this is where I have a few empty plugs hanging... Did somebody rob my tracker of its tcm orrrr... Can anybody help me shed some light on this situation? Thanks in advance :)

Not sure on the trans control module, but I know Suzuki used a lot of universal wiring harnesses so maybe not. As for the lights, I had this issue on a Samurai and it turned out to be a ground issue. I would start by getting a schematic and checking all the ground points and do a continuity check of the main power tires to and from the fuse box.

Google Acks FAQ, and when you get there, search for manual - it will link you to what I believe is a 96 manual.

Well I've went through all the schematics in the chiltons manual... A few questions here. I've replaced all applicable fuses even tho they were good. I tried putting in a new switch assembly with the same result. At this point I'm leaning toward it being a ground issue. Although... I have DTR's could there be an issue somewhere in that system? And is there a possibility that it thinks it's a Christmas tree? One bulb out they all go out?

Let me ask ...

Why?
Why throw parts at a problem?
Why ask for advice & then ignore it?
Why use a Chilton's manual, when you have access to the 96 Tracker factory manuals?

Now let me answer your questions...

By DTR, I'm assuming you're referring to diagnostic codes, no, those are unlikely to be related to a lighting issue, not on a 96.

No, no car is ever wired like a christmas tree, and the Tracker is no exception - the lights are parallel circuits, when one light goes out, the other stay on.

You didn't ask this as a question, but, no, it's unlikely to be a ground issue, the affected lights do not share a common ground, they do however share a common power source, and control switch - it is possible however that you have more than one ground issue.

Why not get a voltmeter (if you don't have one, buy one, even a Harbor Freight cheapie will serve the purpose - it'll actually be less expensive that the new switch assembly) and troubleshoot the problem - the Tracker FSM (Ack's FAQ) has step by step instructions.

Good Advice Fordem, The only thing I would add is that all of those manuals are available here. No need to leave the comfort of the ZUKIWORLD. :)
