'87 Samurai - Help Needed
« on: July 08, 2010, 08:25:20 AM »
I have a '87 Samurai 1.3 ltr w/ Weber carb and header with approx. 98,000 miles on it. Generally if runs fine then it will take fits where it seems like the engine is not getting enough fuel when giving it the gas. Usually if I let it set for awhile it seems to be OK. The only things I have done to the engine is plugs, dist. cap/rotor button, head gasket and camshaft seal, etc.. The plugs and dist. cap/rotor were replaced about (2) weeks ago.

I thought it could be a "vapour lock" problem, but this morning after having problems last evening it still didn't take the fuel right. Could the jets be getting plugged? Could it be the fuel pump?

I also have a spark knock that seems to have gotten better when I retarded the timing and started running higher octane fuel.

Things I plan to check/do:
1) Insulate fuel line from pump to carb (incase it is a vapour lock issue).
2) Check/replace the rubber fuel line sections from the tank to the carb (incase the are deteriorating and plugging the jets).
3) Check for water in the tank (I don't think this is the problem, but who knows. I did wash the underneath this past weekend).
4) Check/replace the fuel filter (it was replaced about four months ago).

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Rick
