hi my name is randy and i have a problem, this might take a while  explain so bear with me.
i run the trail with 5 other samurais all stock 1.3,stock gearing 373 like minetwo are fuel injected the rest carburated like mine, they all have alot more power then i do. mine lugs or boggs down when trying to climb, i am runnimg 31 inch tsl(the smallest in the group) it wont climb i have tried a different carb a different dist. timing belt whole tune up i am stumped please help if you can thanks again

Wow! 31" with stock gearing? I'm suprised you can get out of the way! :) Seriously, you need a crawler t-case or a r&p swap. If in comparison your rig is that much slower, I'd check cylinder compression, clogged cat or muffler, and fuel pump pressure as a last thought.

Does the engine tick quite a bit? Maybe your valve lash needs adjusted or your cam has gone flat???

Anyone else have some thoughts?

we checked and set lash they were in spec. im running samaller tires then anyone else in my group and its still slower and lugs. i hade 33 tsl on it and thought that was my problem so i traded them for the 31 tsl and that did not make a difference

Try some of those other things I mentioned and see if that leads you anywhere.

Have you done a complete tune up? plugs, air/fuel filter....check the carb to see if all the vacuums are hooked and good. This has caused me some concern. Compression check? loosing coolant?

I'd put in some 512's if you don't do toom much road and 462 if you need the speed. I'm running 512's with 30's and I get by but I don't drive it everyday. Are you sure the other guys don't have differnt set-ups? Around here poeple will hide some mods.

i have replaced the plugs wires cap rotor air and fuel i put a rebuilt carb on it  new timing belt set the lash on valves it has 140 in cyl #1 #2 #3 and 150 in #4  im stumped any other ideas would be great thanks again
o yeah it does leak alittle antifreeze out of the rad would that make a difference

Double check cam and ingnition timing? Did you use the flywheel timing marks?

maybe i made a samurai rookie mistake i timed it off the crank balancer not of the flywheel

Are you sure everyone else is running stock gears....transfer case and axle gears both?  I find it hard to believe they could climb anything with stock gears and anything bigger than 31s.  My stock EFI samurai with 28/29s would not climb hardly anything.....even when I got a run at the hill (but the hill was pretty steep......an old rock quarry).

As for timing it off the flywheel.....it really shouldn't make a difference.  I almost always time off the crank pulley.

140-150 is out of spec. for the compression.  Did you hold the throttle wide open when you checked compression?  Did you check compression when the engine was hot or cold?

yeah that is low compression.  If the throttle is not wide open vacuum will be created in the manifold and you will get lower pressures.

31's are big for that gearing. i have 30's and rode like that for a while, i finally put in 4.16 T-case and it crawls quite nicely now.

thanks for the input guys. i did not hold the throttle wide open, i did not know i needed to and yes im sure my buddies are running stock gears in the axle aswell as the tcase. i did not mean that they could climb anything- but they can climb alot easier then i can

 how muck compresion should i have?

the FSM says the standard is 199 PSI with a limit of 170 PSI.  The engine should also be heated up.

when doing timing too, be sure to plug the vacuum advance and read from the flywheel.
