I am not sure if you are talking about auto or stick transmission, transfer case or axles but I would think that one is not being paranoid to change at 50 to 60K.  Mine are square hole plugs and I ground the convex end off of a 3/4" extension to get a better purchase.  Sine then I have bought some 10mm kay (bar) stock to make proper allen wrenches (much like off-set screw drivers).  Clean oil lets you sleep at night.  Refilling can be problematic but places like Harbor freight sell   https://www.harborfreight.com/oil-suction-gun-95468.html...   I could not find the one I have so bought another.  It would not work exactly as it should so I unscrewed the top, pulled the plunger, poured it full of oil, screwed the top back on and squirted into the differential.  It was worth the mess.  Po' folks got Po' ways but it is worth it.  Hope this helps.  If you doubt, I can share bad experiences from over the years..  Tio Pick in Paradise on the Rio
