question about replacing stock struts

Bone stock 1992 2WD tracker - quick question (I think)

Got some new front suspension struts - looks like I don't have to compress the springs?  Just unbolt the top of the strut, then slowly jack the car up, remove the wheel, and undo the bottom two strut bolts?

How often do the top strut plates / bearings go out?  Should I go ahead and plan on replacing them?

1.  You should use a jack stand.  (jacks fail, earth moves, we are FRAGILE)
2.  There are not any bearings on top.

If you can't get the nut off the top, remove the three smaller nuts around the strut nut, and remove the upper strut mount.  Then you can work on it on your bench.
93 Tracker,XL7 springs & 1" raised spring pads in front with YJ springs in back, home built bumpers rear & front (w/winch), 2" x 4" rock tubes,  ARB front & rear, converted Sami rear to IFS, 33x12.5x15  aluminum rims, roll cage, 2.7L w/5 speed auto.

Its a little easier if you put a jack under the wishbone to stop the spring extending.
