Clicking noise from pass front wheel

okay. ive got my choice of three old school zuks to cruise around in at work. they go from decent to shit. i mainly drive the decent one but i drove the "rough" one yesterday and theres a clicking noise coming from the front pass wheel while i drive. it doesnt do it any other time, only when moving. ive looked around under there but cant figure it out. anybody have any idea as to what it could be? thanks

Ive noticed the same noise in my newly acquired 95 manual 4X4 tracker.  On mine it only make the noise when moving and in gear.  When i press the clutch to shift, the noise stops.  I'm pretty sure my problem is with the Manual hub on that side.  when switching the passenger side hub from lock to free, it will not go all the way over to free. it only goes about half way.  I purchased a set of manual hubs from Joe dirt, so I will either install those, or use them to rebuild mine, and see if that clicking noise goes away.  I'll post my findings when i get the extra set of hubs in, and find the time to install.

if it has a CV axle, clicking may be a failing axle,  in the case of vehicles so equipped.   note this isnt really useful on samurais.   for a samurai,  I'd say just put it on a lift or some stands and check it out.

all of them are sami. and im pretty sure i was cruisin around in two wheel with the front still locked. out there the terrain goes from gravel to sand in seconds so poppin it in to four wheel has to be quick. thats why the front stays locked. now on the ones i drive a lot, i always unlock while on gravel and get out and lock it before i hit sand. my boss doesnt do it that way.

Finally found the time to pull off my manual locking hubs, clean them up, re-grease them, and get them re-installed.  The side that was making the clicking noise, had some rust in it, an the spring on the cap was rusted and broken. :(  I assume this was causing the clicking noises.  I used parts from my existing manual hubs, and the used set i acquired to get the cleanest pair, and threw the extra parts in the extra parts bin. since i had the hubs off, went ahead and did the brakes, and cleaned and re-packed the bearings.  It's all back together, and rolling smooth, no clicking in the front wheel anymore. :)

I would guess that the click will come back if you lock the hub, I'm
wondering if it was a bad CV that was turning because the hub was
stuck in lock, even tho the knob said free

I wondered about that myself, but I tried with hubs in free and in lock, and no clicking.  honestly it didn't make sense after i thought about it that the locking hub would make the clicking noise, but nevertheless, it is gone. Wohoo! :)  I guess it could have been some sort of clicking in the brake caliper hardware.  The rotors were in very good shape, and the caliper hardware seemed ok, but since the hardware is pretty cheap and i already had it torn down, i replaced the pads, pad clips, and the pin & bushing/boot.  The only thing about that, is that the clicking seemed to stop when i pressed in the clutch.??  I guess it will just remain a mystery, unless it comes back again.  As it is, everything seems to be working fine, so I'm gonna cross my finger, and keep my hands off...Well, at least until i get time to install the suspension lift i just bought :laugh:
