Absolute Best Shocks for a Samurai?
« on: January 11, 2011, 07:36:13 PM »
Hey all, right now I am trying to smooth out my 91 sammy. I installed OME springs and that seems to have helped a lot especially with low speed bumps and 4x4ing but Highway and road driving is still quite stiff. My thoughts were that the original shocks are not absorbing the quick shocks at higher speed and therefore are preventing the springs from flexing. Am I right in thinking this? If so what would be THE softest BEST shock I could get my hands on (in Canada)? Has anyone tried the gabriel shocks sold by Petroworks? Also, what do you guys think about just figuring out the length dimensions and then just going with a cars shock?

Thanks

A car shock is going to be way too saft to absorb any reall off/on-raod abuse. You didn't say whether or not it's SPOA or SPUA, but presuming it's like the factory setup just about most of the aftermarket shocks would be an improvement. I have been told that Rancho's are too stiff except for the 9000's as their adjustable. Look for names like Bilstein, Heckthorn, Skyjacker, and Superlift as having some of the better rides around and should be fairly easy to get in Canada. Greg

You're right my springs are under axel. Thanks for your feedback. Anyone else know anything on the subject of shocks?

I am considering them. The only thing holding me back is that I live in Canada and my options up here to get the shocks are too either:

1) Buy them at Cap-It and pay like $80/shock before taxes
2) Buy them online for cheaper but pay an arm and a leg for shipping.

JKZ do you have any experience with OME shocks before and after installation?

No personal experience.  However, a few of my wheeling buddies have them.  They say there is a night and day difference.  Much better with the OME shocks.  Oh, and by the way, there rigs are daily drivers not trailer queens.  Mixture of SPOA & SPUA.

kind of a open ended question though.....I like sway-a-ways 2.0" remote res. call 'em up tell them what you need and get them custom built for your rig. there rebuildable therefor usable for a lifetime.

Phil, it kinda sounds like it may balance out either way you look at it price wise. Either you'll have cheap priced shocks but get stuck with all the duty taxes, or you'll have expensive priced shocks at your local distributor. Can't say which is going to be cheaper for ya but that's something you'll have to price out for yourself. All that I can say about OME shocks is that they have got to be better than stock shocks performance wise.
