Help! I suck at wiring!
« on: October 10, 2015, 01:56:55 PM »
Howdy folks,

My name's Malystryx (pseudonym), I live in NC, and am the  ambivalent owner of a '94 Zuki Sidekick 4-door. It's rusty, maybe trusty, and Definitely doesn't have a working gauge cluster. I'll get to that last part in a moment. Otherwise, it's my daily beater. It has a cheapo suspension lift and 30's on it. It's obviously seen a lot of action over the years.

Well, the problem is, the gauge cluster doesn't work... kinda. The original cluster had some issues internally, so I bought a used one. Welp... they're different. Time for a quick visual.

the back of my original cluster looks like this:

and the new one I installed looks like this:

Obviously a bit different. Being the overconfident yahoo I am, I decided that I would just re-pin it so it works. Wellll... I kind of succeeded. not really. now none of the gauges function properly. speedo reads random speeds (it needs a new speedo cable), tach doesn't read anything, gas gauge reads always full, temp works... kinda, you get the picture.

Anyway, after exhaustive research, and comparing more than one conflicting wiring diagram, I'm completely lost. Would someone please do me a great favor, and take a clear picture of the wiring on the back of their gauge cluster, because obviously I don't know which wire goes where.

P.S. I hate wiring.

P.P.S. Oh! at least the tripometer and odometer work!

I do not recognize the second dash.  With wiring diagrams you can wire different instrument clusters to work.  Without diagrams you could trace trace each pin through to the instrument and the ground and then connect it to the appropriate wires to make it function, but it requires good notes and lots of patience.
93 Tracker,XL7 springs & 1" raised spring pads in front with YJ springs in back, home built bumpers rear & front (w/winch), 2" x 4" rock tubes,  ARB front & rear, converted Sami rear to IFS, 33x12.5x15  aluminum rims, roll cage, 2.7L w/5 speed auto.

Unfortunately, the wiring diagrams that I have found are either incorrect, or incomplete. I've tried tracing the wiring on the cluster itself, but was very unsuccessful.

If your odometer is correct, it is the speedometer that is bad, not the cable.  The needle strips on its post and then occasionally grabs, giving erratic readings.
You do not have the same pin count, so it will not just be a pin swap.
This is from my FSM for a 93 instrument cluster.  Hope it helps you.
