1.3 0r 1.6L in Samurai?
« on: October 25, 2010, 09:06:22 AM »
I'm looking at a Samurai 1988, owner is not sure if the motor is a 1.3 or 1.6L is there a way to tell which motor is in it? I have attached a picture not sure if this will help or not?
Thanks

Take a look at the block on the (US) driver's side, near the bellhousing it will say G13 or G16.

I know it's not a 1.6l 16v.  Unfortunently I think the 1.6L 8v and the 1.3L have a similar looking valve cover.

Yep, that is the most positive way to tell.  Since it could be a 1.6 with a 1.3 intake and carb setup on it.
The 1.3 will say either 1298 or 1324 back by the bellhousing.
The 1.6 will say 1590 back by the bellhousing.

Not if the block has been drilled and tapped.

You can do that? Why doesn't someone make 1.6 blocks for Samurai install
that don't need a plate instead, sounds like a better idea to me

Probably because it is cheaper and easier to make the adapter plate.
