91 kick computer (?) prob
« on: October 05, 2011, 01:14:03 PM »
so ive bot a 91 kick ( tbi 8v, 5 spd, 2 door) it wont start. ive checked a bunch of things already. it cranks and attempts to start but just wont fire up and run, almost like its not getting gas. its getting good fuel pressure, gets spark just fine, the exhaust/ cat isnt plugged at all. ive also checked distributor timing, and inspected the timing belt. all good.

so here is what i think seems to be happening. it gets fuel to to injector, but the injector wont fire. so would this be a computer problem? how do i test this? any other ideas?

ive already replaced the injector with a known good unit. and it still wont go. i dont really know much about computer problems.

Most likely to be a problem with the ECU, the 8Vs have electrolytic capacitors which have a life expectancy of around 11 years, yours is 20 years old and may well still have the original parts inside.
The capacitors vent acid when they fail and this can erode traces on the PCB. I own a company that modifies and repairs ECUs, I've seen many of these.
Before you condemn it you should check that the connection from the noise suppresor to the ECU (brown wired) is good, without that the ECU will not see the spark and will shut down the fuelling.

i think ive heard a little about that ECU capacitor problem problem, i didnt know how or what would be affected by it tho

so check the noise suppression wire? would i be checking it at the ECU connector? for continuity or voltage?

when you say shut down fueling, does that mean stopping the injector from pulsing? just curious, sorry im asking so many questions.

The best way to check for a bad ECM is to swap it out with a known good one.  If you don't have another one to swap in, pull the old ECM out and pull the cover off and look around the electrolytic capacitors (they look like miniature pop cans with silver tops), to see if they have leaked and damaged or discolored the circuit board around them.  If they have, then it is a good bet they are bad and need replaced and likely some of the traces on the board need to be repaired too.

The wire from the noise suppressor back to the ECU is called the Ignition Fail Safe signal, if the ECU doesn't see a spark then it won't pulse the injector, it should be checked for continuity.
The capacitor problem usually affects the injector circuit on the early 8V ECUs, the MK2 8V ECUs have a different injector driver and on those its usually the capacitor on the 12V power rail that fails. You can't always see the damage until you remove the cap, it can look perfect. The ECU is static senstive so you should never touvh the pins or open the cae unless you are using a proper ESD work station.
