t-case identity
« on: October 03, 2012, 09:04:07 AM »
Hi all
Just started on my new old sammi, pulled the t-case drain plug and a drop of tarry stuff hung there so I pocked it and caught a gallon of nasty water on my chest. My question is I aquired another t-case but it has an E brake drum on back.Is this compatible to my 88 without drum?I would really like to have that E brake for better reverse hold. Thanks and a used work shirt to anybody that wants it.   Chitzu

I think you would have driveline length issues.  How much does it stick out compared to your old yoke?

It's a pre 86. The flanges will be different . Worth the effort though. Shaft brakes are grate ..... Boxcar...

Thanks guys
I don't have the "old" one out yet but if pre 86 is not inheritantly bad then I can make the driveline work.

I had taken my 92 Samurai's T-case and installed it into my 88 and yes the flanges are different but other then that it fit just fine.  If yours has a good lift, you may not even need to do anything with the driveline.  Since most people end up installing driveline spacers, may end up fitting perfect without any mods.

If it has a drum on the back it is likely a SJ-410 t-case.  It will have a 10% gear reduction in high and low range over the stock Samurai t-case.

:)Thanks for the help, hope to have some time this weekend. The extra 10% reduction is nice but may not need it with the big 1.3 engine.I'll keep track of what it takes just in case somebody needs it.   Chitzu

One more thing, if you pull the drum brake off you can just bolt on your stock flange.
