Dropping Sam Engine

next weekend gonna start droppin my engine however, not real sure how to doit/what to do first.

I will not have access to a cherry picker sop my thought was to unbolt/wire everything with the motor mounts being last so atleast it'll stay put until im ready to pull it out.  does that sound logical or somthing close to a "good idea?"
if a bigger hammer, bigger tires or more gas doesn't help... your doing it wrong.

I've done a couple with a come-along.  Wal-Mart has em for about $25.00.  A light engine like a 1.3 shouldnt be too much of a problem this way.  Or, you could unbolt everything from the block, head included and lift it out by hand.  Its been done before.  Or, one time I put rings and bearings in a 3-cylinder Metro engine by pulling the head and oil pan and leaving the block bolted in. It seemed like the easiest way at the time.

Your right on track. If you haven't pulled an engine before here a couple of easy suggestions that might help later on.

Use masking tape on the hoses wires you remove and write on them wst the are / where they go.
Take pictures before you remove everything.
If you don't have to remove it and it can be wired or zip tied back do it.
Remove the coolant 1st. That way it can drain out good before the engines starts its upward journey.

removal order
breather / ductwork
cooling fan
radiator
hoses
wiring
bellhousing bolts
motor mounts

Slowly begin to lift.......
I know the voices aren't real.... but they have some pretty kewl ideas!!! Tux.....  ;-)

It might be easier to remove the front clip so you can get to the engine easier. There are only about 10 bolts holding the entire front end in place.

so after day 1, i go toil drained, antifreeze drained (after spillin it all over the garage).  started getting most of the stuff unplugged and hoses taken off.  anyone that can help with this, about middle of the fire wall theres 2 hoses leading into the cab.  one goes into the engine, when trying to take it off liquid that kinda smelled like anitfreeze leaked out a bit.

-What are those hoses?
-how did yall label all the plugs from the carb etc? 
-are there any other liquids i havent thought of or mentioned to watch out for?

Those hoses would be the heater core inlet / outler lines. If you don't have a Samurai manual from Haynes or similar I would pick one up. It will help you out greatly to identify items as you go along. Not to mention the benefits during assembly.

for items that you can't identify when removing (such as lines / wires) develop a matching number / letter system. 1=1 during assembly or A=A.

Another help is to number  / letter the item, take a picture and print it. Then write the corresponding number / letter on the item in the picture.

i keep being told its the heater etc but should there be liquid in there?

im not keeping the 1.3, im putting in a 2.0 vw gas engine fyi

yup coolant should be there. the coolant going through the heater core is where you get your tiny bit of heat for the cab and it helps to draw heat out of the engine. if you happen to come up to the salt lake area I can make a copy of my fsm for you if you want it?

take lots of reference pics too they will be a invaluable tool for any kind of reassembly even if you are going to a different motor. 8)
