High idle
« on: April 27, 2011, 07:33:16 AM »
Hey,
So after messing around with a bad motor for a month I put a different one in and got it fired up last night. I have adjusted the throttle cable to when it starts ip it will idle at like 900. After a few minutes, when it warms up a bit the idle will slowly increase to about 1700 or so. I can get it to kick back down. I know they have a water choke, but this seems backwards to me. It is the stock carb. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Kyle

Check if all the connectors are tight, double check grounds,
ALSO make sure all lights, A/C Heater is OFF, and if you have an electric cooling fan; it's off.
The ECU may be telling the Carb to Kick Up the Idle so the Alt. will keep up.

Just some ideas,

Sounds like it has a vacuum  leak, with some expanding and creating the leak when it warms up. with it warm spray wd40 around the intake and see if it revs up more.  ???

So I guess I should have posted that this is a stock 86 Sammy with stock carb.
I rechecked the vacuum lines and there were a couple either not hooked up or in the wrong place, after fixing those though I still have the same problem. Although the idle seems to be a little lower on initial start up. 700 rpm or so but then as it warms up it jumps ip to about 2200 or so. I found that if I push the clutch in it will drop to about 1800 rpm.

I have checked and double checked the wiring and grounds and all looks good. This is sure giving me fits, I really want to get this figured out so I can move on to some other fun stuff. ( lift, bumpers, wheels and tires). Wonder if a weber upgrade would solve my problems?!?  Anyone wanting to sell one?

There are two idle adjustments on the stock carburator. The cold idle is the one that is close to the throttle cable and is the one many mistake for the idle adjustment. If you look to the back / passenger side of the stock carb at the base, there is a second adjustment screw. ...and this may have nothing to do with your problem. :)

Right close to the cold idle adjustment is a plunger/vacuum diaphram that 'idles up' the carb whenever there is a load such as lights, blower motor, etc... When the 'computer' senses the vehicle is up to temp it'll activate this through a vacuum solenoid that is right at the front and up high on the engine.... but sometimes gets confused and actuates that plunger just because, 'idling up' the engine. You can adjust that plunger stop to get it out of the 'way' complete if you'd like and just forget about it. Or, some people disconnect and cap off the vacuum to the solenoid.

Maybe this is it?

Hope that helps. -Eric
