So I'm still learning about the Sammi I bought, (first time owner)
It has over heating problems and was generally running rough.

I'm giving it a pretty good go over, re-packing the fan clutch, new thermostat, water pump and timing belt.

Then the usual oil change, plugs and wires... and anything else until I can get the bugs worked out.

I noticed however while researching the water pump/timing belt change, that the cover for my timing belt was missing. I'm showing my ignorance here, but is it needed? As in do I need to hold of on the swap till I can find one?

PetroWorks has them for $23.99.............

Theres a company called Dorman that makes them, I got one off ebay for under $20.

They're probably a good idea to have to keep stick and garbage out, but not mandatory.

 
Being a interferrance fit engine you do not want anything to potentially get between the belt and gears as the timing will jump very easily and then you have a bunch of bent damaged internals. If it was a stationary engine used to run a generator then I would say the cover is optional, but on a street/offroad driven vehicle it should be considered very important.

Ummm - the engine in the picture has a pressed steel valve cover, so it'll be 8v and non-interference - still - a stick or rock in the belt when you're out in the trail is going to mean a long walk home, so I'd get a cover.

darn, why was I thinking that when I know the difference?, old fart itus,,,,,

But still, the advice remains the same as Fordem pointed out.

Plus it's alot easier to time the engine as the timing indicator is on the cover.
