Hey guys,

I am trying to do some rust repair on my 91 samurai. I have a small amount of rust on the front right fender. My plan was to remove the screws, repair it and then bolt it back in place, but the screws are very solidly in place. I was wondering, are the fender bolts permanently locktited in there? Were they ever intended to be removed? If so what is the best way of getting those bolts out? Also, do you think it would just be a better idea to just do my bodywork with the fender on the vehicle?

The flares sre held on by banjo clips and a slotted fender lip.

Just give the banjo clips a big tug and pull them out. Cut them off or whtever is easiest. You can buy new ones at Auto Zone or a wrecking yard.

I didn't put mine back on using them. I put mine on using the ribbed push pins that are prevalent on new cars plastic interiors / exteriors. They are easier to come by and much cheaper.

As for the flare and all of the plastic molding, once you remove the pins they just lift out of the spot welded body trim mounts.

He's got metal fender flares, right?

Do you have an impact screw driver? That is probably what you'll need to get them loose.

Ya I tried the impact. It resulted in a couple of stripped heads and a busted driver bit. I decided to just go ahead with the repair with it still on. It worked out pretty good but I ended up finding more rust under the rocker guards, which didnt make me very happy.

I did patch it all and get it painted and it seems to have worked out fine. Im really impressed that the spray bomb red I picked out is a complete match for my paint .

I do have another question for you guys. What do you think about using butyl sealant and rivets (with sheetmetal) to patch some places behind the rear fenders?

It will work, but not as well as welding it.
