my 97 vitara JLX (4 door tracker auto) just bogged down due to electrical problems and asked for a friend to tow my vit with his truck. Before we started moving I put the transfer case to N and the tranny shifter to Park as the manual specified. When we started rolling I hear a clunking sound at the front end center.

Could it be the tcase or the auto hubs needs cleaning or replacement? I havent put it into 4WD for quite a while now.   

It's the hubs trying to lock up, t-case in N activates the front driveshaft,
tow it in 2-high Trans in N, I have a 89 auto and this is how I tow it, you
have a different trans, might not tow the same.

If you have far to go, drop the rear driveshaft, it's safer
OR get a 2 low kit and a twin stick, then you can shift the T-case to
N and not activate the front driveshaft

You are exactly correct, I found that out with my 95 kick, I had already changed the auto lockers to manuals, but found that when the t-case was in neutral, it locked in the front prop shaft too. Since I tow it quite a bit, I just disconnect the rear drive shaft and leave everything else alone. (I also leave the front hubs unlocked)
