throw out bearing or trans or something else???
« on: September 29, 2011, 12:19:50 AM »
i have a 86 sammi and when i let the clutch out in neutral theres a winy noise, when i push the clutch in it goes away. it wines in all gears but 4th. the noise sounds like it is coming from the bell housing right where the trani attaches to the motor. i did try adding lucas oil stabilizer to see if it would calm it down but it didn't. the transmission shifts tight and has no slop and it does not pop out of gear. I could really use some help here, if it is the transmission what does it cost to rebuild??? money is pretty tight but if it helps anyone with referrals i live in riverside county in CA

Noisy in all gears except for 4th is generally a good indication that the bearings inside the tranny need replaced.  If you can do it yourself, you can buy good quality bearing and synchro kits for under $150, off of ebay....or I think some vendors carry them too, for just a little more than ebay.  If someone else is going to have to fix it, then I have no idea what it would cost.
A bad throw out bearing should only make noise when you push in on the clutch (that is when it is spinning).  When the clutch pedal is up, then the bearing is not spinning (or shouldn't be, if the clutch is adjusted correctly) and won't make any noise, no matter if it is good or bad.
