1985 samurai upgrades info!
« on: January 10, 2010, 04:49:18 AM »
hi ! i,m in the process of installing axles under springs off 1985 samurai . putting front crown and pignon from tracker with 5.12 ratio,in the 1985 narrow axle housing. i want too run 31 in swappers that i have. rear end is installed starting on front end.i notice that the wheels will be close too springs ,how will it work on the front ,will it be too close and not be able too steer correctly? should i use the later wider axle housing too give more room? i was hopeing to keep as narrow as possible.maybe with difference wheel off set, anybody know off a factory wheel that would be ok? oh and another question i installed a tracker ps had to make a wedge between steering box and frame to have a better steering wheel shaft angle, is this  the way ? any tips on crank double pulleys, don,t have a flat pulley yet was thinking of welding 2 together? this is a cheap built trying to buy junk yard parts.

Just add some 1" wheel spacers.

If it has the 5 on 5.5 it might work.  The real question is the backspacing, most of the club run wheels with 3.5" of backspacing to make sure they clear the springs.  If the tire fits on your existing wheel I would go with cobleeze's suggestion of just using a 1" spacer.

I picked up a set of Dodge wheel spacers on E-Bay a while back. The only problem with that is you need to make sure they send you Metric nuts and a set of acorn nuts as they usually switch to standard threads.  If you go with the Spidertrax ones, great quality, they allow you to stay metric.

i just made my z bar with tubeing. its just a regular 3/4inch inside tubeing which i bent like a z bar, and cut the tie rods slide them in the pipe.  i can,t see any problems with my welds but wondering if it could deform under stress? how do most folks arrange there steering when putting axle under spring?

It's more of a bump steer thing then deforming most of the time.  I use the OTT system from Sky Manufacturing.
