Hello i just got a 87 samurai special eddition from colorado, the car is running very rich, i think it has to do the altiude diffrence, any one know where i can find new jets for the carb so its jetted for New york and not 5000ft above sea level, thank you
If your Samurai's carburetor was jetted specifically for higher elevations like Dever, it would run
lean, not richer, at sea level. Jetting isn't the problem...
I would start checking the basics, clogged air filter, obstructed air tube, choke operation, float level, leaky float (that sinks), clogged cat converter.
I just went through a system by system chase-down of a problem that had my '86 not passing the California smog test, and labeled as a 'gross polluter'. The Suzuki factory service manual (
not Chilton's, Clymer or Haynes...yuck!) has an excellent section on troubleshooting the emissions and carburetor systems, WELL WORTH the purchase of the CD (bought mine on ebay, downloaded it the same day over the net, the CD came vi mail one week later). These older vehicles are sort of
hybrid, not old school, dead simple carburetors, not modern self diagnosing ECU controlled fuel injection. Rather, they have very complex and sophisticated carburetor and emissions systems that conspire in concert to deliver for the very worst of both worlds! Hahahaha! Just kidding, it's not that bad.
