samuria valve seal replacement
« on: October 15, 2010, 06:15:55 AM »
I searched an didnt find anything. I wanted to know if u can change the valve seals on the samuria while the head is still on the motor. I get alot of smoke while she is running an my compression is good across all tje cylindera an the plugs are burning clean but its still smoking. I seafoamed the motor an it still does it . May be its the oil returns are plugged. I havnt tried any additives yet just thought id see if the valve seals were easy to change with the head on the motor

You should be able to do it.  You will need to make an adapter so you can pump compressed air into the cylinder to hold the valves up, while you remove the springs.  Or you might be able to rotate that particular piston to TDC and the valves might not fall too far into the cylinder (not sure about that though).

I don't think the valve guide seals are going to help you and the
smoke problem, but in answer to your question, yes, I did it on
my 1.6L Sidekick, pain in the butt.

Running engines smoke from bad rings, the compression might be fine,
but the scraper is the one that keeps the oil in the pan, and the vacuum
is sucking it past the second ring.

Bad valve guide seals cause that puff of smoke when you start the engine
after it's been sitting for an hour or so, the oil drips into the cylinders and
burns as the engine starts, but constant smoke takes quite a bit more oil
than the seals can leak, BTW Many older cars (40s-50s) didn't use valve guide
seals because the oil control was not considered an issue at that spot in the engine

Well that really sucks. I hope. Ur wrong  ;D. The motors got tons of power. I just bought the rig an havnt driven it too much just up the power lines to make sure the 4 wheel drive worked in it an what not. I havnt even put more then a gallon of gas   in it. The gas it uad in it was like five years old an it only had like a gallon in it so im makin my assesment on 1 gallon of five yea4 old gas 1 gallon of new super gas an a seafoam treat ment on that 2 gallons of gas. Ive had the thing idelin an what not for probably   2 hours total so the seafoam shouldnt be affectin it. Idk . Maybe new gas is all it needs im probably out on a limb with that thou.

ever check your pcv valve?  they can suck through them  or cause to much crankcase pressure.   most likely the rings mine were all sorts of stuck when I tore mine down

It's the Seafoam, just fill the tank all the way up and drive it, Seafoam
smokes like crazy, even a full tank with a can of that could still smoke.

It's the little details like the Seafoam treatment that makes for a bad
diagnosis, don't tear into your engine, it's likely in good shape, just run
that stuff until it's gone and enjoy your new ride

Well i took the valve cover off yesterday jusr to take a look at what i would be getting in too. I found the first cam bearing cap ppretty much freefloatin cause the two screws backed out an were just resting on top of the holes an one screw frome the cam cap behind it had worked its way out. So with a valve adjustment an 5 gallons of fresh gas an 2 hours of ideling in my front yard i have reduced 50 percent of the smokin. I think i could drive it now an not kill any body. Or more importantly get a ticket. It still smokes some but no were near as bad. Now operation samuri begins . Just ordered my new fenders cant wait to put this thing together.

huh I will have to try and take my valve cover off and check everything too since mine is smoking alittle bit. The last owner of mine did a half assed job at putting in the motor after a rebuild so its possible mine has a similer problem in the head.
