Greetings everyone. I just bought my first 86 Samurai! Runs good. But I have an exhaust problem, the cab smells bad with exhaust fumes. The previous owner put on a hedman header with two inch exhaust pipe. The pipe runs straight out the back between the gas tank and leaf spring. Do I need to put a 90degree bend in the end to keep the fumes from coming in through the soft top. The pipe has a few leaks from bad welds, I'll clean those up. The headed had a bolt missing and one bolt had standard threads and was just hanging there. I fixed those. Floorboards are great ,no rust. Any ideas?

Id fix the exhaust leaks 1st and see if the smell in the cab goes a way before doing anything else. My exhaust is run straight out the back like yours and I havent noticed a smell when I have my top on.

I ran a new exhaust on my sammy build, the pipe exited in the same spot you mentioned. The fumes burned my eyes even with the top and doors off. Admitedly the air fuel mixture was off but when I added 2 90s and a couple inches of pipe to move the exhaust to the corner of the vehicle it made a huge difference.

I'll fix the pin hole leaks for sure! Adding a 90 right now is a quick fix for me. I'll try this and than drop the line to repair the welds at a later date.

Also the old owner welded the end of the tail pipe to the frames hanger bracket... I was wondering if I should cut this and use a real hanger with a rubber bushing thing...? it seems like there needs to be a little flex in the line..right or wrong?

Also do you think I need to pull the header and reapply the gasket since there were a few bolts missing??

The elbow and extra pipe did the trick, I also fixed the exhaust leaks. I put my hand over the tail pipe and the engine did not faulter, it kept running fine? So i got a rag and plugged it again, I checked the header and no exhaust leaks there that I could see or feel. I looked at the muffler and the condensation was coming out the seams of the muffler. Do you suppose it is just a cheap muffler??? It looks sound.

Most chambered mufflers have a verry small drain hole or 2 to allow water to escape . They do this to prevent rusting through

i dont know your budget but take a look at lowrange offroads offering of exhaust kits.

Thanks, when i get more time I am going to pull the header and put new bolts  and a new gasket in. I am a little leery of pulling the header and having an old bolt break or strip out.  Muffler will get replaced at some point too.
