Are these Calmini Springs Shot?
« on: October 15, 2011, 09:48:01 PM »
The struts are obviously blown and we are replacing with cheaper Monroe Sensamatic and Dave's spacers from the UK but do these springs look like they may be collapsed?  When the truck is at a standstill the drivers side is a bit lower, the second you give it gas the front lifts about one or two inches and stays that way while driving.  The springs are rubbing powder coating off where they appear to be compressing fully, that is my reason for asking, should they have more pitch to them?  Please chime in...

the spring looks compressed, as if you've jacked that wheel up at the a-arm?
i would think the bump stop should keep it from complete compression. mabe the strut was the bump stop?

mabe i'm not seeing the pic. right- if that is static load on the wheel, it looks collapsed to me....

It is a 95 two door sitting on the ground in pic and truck has 31's, both struts are Calminis and have oil all over them.

mine is an '89, but the setup is similar(i think).
these are stock springs with pucks(jeff's) sitting on the ground.

your's don't look very springy.
i wonder how that happens?

re: blown struts- i blew my rear shocks by using them as bump stops. then i lowered the stops.

They kinda looked clapped to me. I went through a couple sets of Calmini coils before I found better replacemants. Probably not the fault of the coil though, the geometry of the coil mounting twists them in some unatural ways, that and they are progressively wound the first bit of travel being softer than the rest. They usually start to sag after coil binding awhile, and then just loose their tension. The struts are crap to begin with.

If the Ford F-150 front coils work I was going to get a used set, cut the end off and get them powder coated blue to match.  Then I will have imitation calmini coils to match all the other blue parts.

i've been wondering if front springs from a 4door model would have more "spring".
do the calmini struts have a longer stoke?

The Calmini struts are just stock off the shelf units, nothing special.

BRD HNTR modified his spring cup to straighten the springs out.  He had an issue with the bow being enough to hit the brake caliper on flex.

I did mine the opposite of BRD HNTR's, where he built up the a arm cup, I cut mine out so the coil would straighten out. Either way it's a good mod IMO.

The first gen trucks have steel A-arms and the second have the cast A-arms.  I'm not sure you can grind/weld safely on the cast arms like you can the steel arms can you?

Cast what? iron, aluminum? either can be welded, but if it's an aluminum alloy it may be tricky.
