Alternator worked for weeks
« on: January 21, 2017, 03:52:20 PM »
Greetings, 1997 Sidekick battery died.  Cleaned battery posts, started the car alternator began charging, later that day stopped charging. Seems to happen during rain or snow.

Hi guys, If you could, talk this No Charge problem with me, I'd very much appreciate the help. I can give the history and what tests and work has been done.

Thank you

Richard

I hope to remember to do that when the car is here.

I asked about fusible link in one post, here is a couple lines fordem posted on another forum re 1998 sidekick:

"Try using your multi meter to verify continuity between the alternator output post and the battery positive post - there is a fusible link in between there that may be open."
------
I'll see about that also. The weather has been warming so, if and when the car is within grabbing distance there will be less pain working on it.

IF that fusible link was open, there would be no way the alternator could/should have worked for weeks - at this point I would have had that entire portion of the circuit apart and every connection inspected - I will admit that I don't have to deal with winter weather, but this is a task that should not take more than an hour or two.

Disconnect the battery, unbolt the underhood fuse panel, flip it over and inspect it - unbolt the connections to the main fuse, clean and reassemble, if you wish apply some dielectric grease for protection.
