oill leak at rear of head at or near distibutor on 87 samurai
« on: October 16, 2010, 01:49:05 PM »
my 87 samurai is leaking oil at rear of head below valve cover ( i think), but i can't tell if its from head or distibutor housing or elsewhere. the bell housing is coated with oil and it is getting to the header and I fear it may burn. afterr short periods of running it smells and I've even seen smoke. the engiine and trans function fine.is there a seal or gasket back there that maybe causing leak? I am not a mechanic though I am of the backyard DIY type , just need some good information to know where and what I need to fix /repair/replace.Thanks For your Help!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is an o-ring where the distributor mounts to the engine and leaks there are quite common, I believe there is also an o-ring in the distributor itself.

Learn how to set the ignition timing - search there are many threads - before removing the distributor, and be sure to turn the engine to line up the timing marks, and then mark the distributor position AND the rotor position, before disassembling anything, it'll make the reassembly go a lot easier.

check the manual fuel pump located at passenger side closest to firewall on back of head. in most cases the breather tube on the fuel pump will leak in the same area you have described.

If it is the fuel pump change it NOW as you're getting gas in the oil and will soon wipe out your engine.

Yes you beat me to it. Both o-rings cost like a measly 11 bucks from Hawk Suzuki. This link was very helpful as I was also scared to try anything that dealt with ignition timing.

But I followed those instructions EXACTLY and had no troubles.
ALSO: I marked my housing with a permanent marker then figured I'd back it up with three marks from a scratch awl. Turned out to be a VERY WISE decision because I wiped the housing with lacquer thinner to degrease it and accidentally took the permanent marker markings with it. So back it up with a fine etch from a scratch awl or something, my recommendation, and follow those instructions. They're for a 1.6L 8v but should be the same as your Samurai.
I also added RTV to the housing mating surface, but whatever, that's just personal preference. I did it as overkill or extra insurance because I didn't want that b!tch leaking again! (and it hasn't thus far).

God put me on earth to accomplish a certain number of things.  Right now I am so far behind, I will never die.
