88 Samurai cold idle problem
« on: February 05, 2011, 01:36:18 PM »
I purchased a 88 Suzuki Samurai last week. All stock, 87,000 miles, 40,000 were towed miles.
It runs great, very quiet, just one problem: It will not run when cold without holding my foot on the gas to keep it at 1500 rpm.
When it warms up, after 3 to 5 minutes, it idles perfrctly at 1000 rpm. All re-starts, as long as the engine is warm, are easy and it idles fine.

I am new to this and I have done the following:
cleaned the carb inside & out with carb cleaner
checked all vaccum lines for leaks and connections
replaced air filter

Any suggestions?

My zuki would start fine but choke would not open up after the engine warmed up. I now have it wired open and have to pat the gas pedal to keep it running until the engine warms up. So check your choke. When the engine is cold it should be closed and of course open as the engine temp rises.

Thanks for the reply.
I took the intake case off and the choke is opening & closing OK with engine temperature, so now I assume I have a problem with the idle-up system.
When I cut on the lights & heater fan, the engine idles down just a little with the electrical load, not up.
The next thing I am going to check is the idle-up actuater and the three-way solenoid valve and connecting vacuum lines.

Does anyone have a source for the TWSV and idle-up actuator?

I'll post a update after the tests.

Did you have to disable any smog related parts to make the manual choke conversion? I'm in Cali., if it dosnt interfere with passing smog I would be interested in get more info on how to do this.

Right now my choke stays open when cold, choke plate moves freely with my finger.
