88.5 Samurai Engine ID
« on: May 15, 2010, 10:41:08 AM »
Hey,
I'm a new Samurai owner and I know that it has had a "new" engine swapped in about a year ago.  Unfortunately I don't know exactly what the engine came out of.  I was told it was out of a Suzuki (not a Samurai) and an adapter plate was needed.  I also have a parts list of gaskets, water pump, and seals.  A search of these part numbers lead primarily to a 1989 Sidekick with a 1.6L.  Is there a way to verify by looking under the hood or finding an ID number?
Thanks for the help

The engine will have a number etched into it towards the back near the bellhousing - look for it - it will say something like G13A-12345, G16A-12345 or maybe J18A-12345 or J20A-12345

This may not tell you what the engine came out of but it will tell you what engine it is and may tell you what year it was made in.

As far as I know the original engine in a Samurai would have been a 1324cc G13A, and the common replacements would be another G13, possibly a 1298cc G13B or BA which would not require an adapter plate, or a G16A or G16B which would - the SideKick you mention would have had a G16 engine. The last two examples - the J series engines are less likely but I suppose possible.

You could also post a picture, I'm sure many of the folks here would be willing to tell you what it is under the hood if they can recognize it.

Thanks guys,
I checked it out and it definitely says 1298cc - G13M145213.
At least I know what it is even if I don't know for sure what it came out of.
Is it basically the same 1.3L that is in the Samurai?
Are these fuel injected?  I have an old Chevy that is TBI and it looks like a carb'd engine, though it is FI.
Thanks again

I think it's picture time my friend.

Assuming you're in the USA and the engine you're looking at was intended for a US vehicle, the M would translate to a 1991 year of production, other than that all we really know is it's a 1298cc G13 series engine, which is the same family as the original Samurai engine, which would most likely have been a 1324cc G13A.
