86 Samurai possible air leak.
« on: May 29, 2012, 10:26:13 PM »
I just put a rebuilt engine into a 1986 samurai and I can't get the thing to idle. It acts like it's not getting any fuel on the idle jet. Just like an air leak. I checked the manifold as best as I could for air leaks. I used a vacuum pump and a gauge on everything plugged into the manifold, then I sprayed every fitting with carb cleaner and listened for a change in running. Nothing! Above Idle this engine runs strong aside from a secondary throttle plate I can't get to open untill I get to 4000 rpm.

This next issue is odd. I did the "clicky" test on the MCS and blew through it to make sure it is clear. I probed across the terminals for the MCS and got 30 Ohms of resistance. I checked the wiring to the O2 sensor and the MCS and it was good.

Funny thing is I can unplug the computer and the engine runs exactly the same. Is my MCS or my ECM fried?

This is my course of action I am going to take. I am going to drive the samurai to a local shop and have them look for air leaks too just to get that out of the way. Next I want to test the ECM but I don't know how. I would assume plugging it into a running samurai but I don't have access.

Third, I want to test the carburetor.  I want Petroworks to do it because they smog check their carburetors. However, Petroworks said they could do it but they are also swamped with carburetor work and would take a long time to get to it.

So my questions are: Would a non functional MCS make my engine act like it has an air leak? Where can I get a known good ECM?

I took it to a shop yesterday and paid them to search for leaks, they couldn't find any with their smoke machine.

The sensor light only briefly comes on when the key is turned on, the turns off after a few seconds.

The good news Is I got another ECM computer yesterday in the mail and that helped alot. Now at least it can idle and drive. It idles rough at about 900 RPM now. And, I still need to pump the gas pedal once to start it and it won't idle unless you rev it to atleast 2000 RPM right after it starts.

I am going to try replacing the mixture control solenoid next.
