96 Tracker with 5 speed and plenty of lube on the underside that needs a steam clean job . Got a slow leak from the trans above the fill port on the left side (top of the trans somewhere) that ends up landing on the cat which is ok except for the stink when I get the cat hot.  Trans sets mighty tight to the floor pan, so I was hoping one of you guys could give the rookie the right answer.  Is there a seal/gasket or something on the top plate where the shift lever comes through that can be accessed through the floor board or is this a stop being a sissy and roll under there and drop the tranny deal?  If it is a drop the trans deal is there something else I should look at or address while I have all that room?  If no access plate, would it be a good idea to make one, or does the frequency of needing access at that point not warrant making an access hole.

There isn't to much up there that can leak, so I was just going to let someone else speak up. 

The fill port is on the right side (passengers side) on the trackick 5 speeds.  So I am not sure what you are calling the fill port.
There is a rubber plug that is supposed to be in place between the backup and 5th gear switchs (actually yours probably just has the backup switch), on the drivers side of the tranny, up high.  If that plug is missing, gear oil can leak out.  I am not sure how much will leak out, since I haven't ever ran without one, but it is a passage into the tranny, so some can/will leak out.
It isn't likely that gear oil is leaking out between the shift tower and the tranny.  For one, it is on top of the tranny, so it would be pretty hard for gear oil to get slung that high, then actually leak out.
Are you sure it is gear oil and not engine oil?  If the oil pan is leaking, then it can blow back all over the tranny/cat/etc. and be hard to tell from where exactly it is leaking.

I knew you guys would have some ideas.  Thanks.  I'll get it steam cleaned then drive it and tracker it down.  I'll make sure there is a plug on the left before cleaning to keep water out.  Can't do anywork that would take it out of service right now until my brides car is out of the body shop.
