We have our second tracker which is an 03 ZR2 convertible 2.0 Auto...My wife uses it for a daily driver
two miles to work..The high idle sequence is; 1600(25 sec)1500(2.75 min)1000(40 sec) and finally
850..She usually lets it go to to the 850 but if in a hurry will shift in Dr at 1000...She only has a two mile drive
at 40-45 mph..My thought is that it really seems to waste gas and with food and gas on its way north, any savings would work was always brought up to let it run for a minute then kick it off high idle as shifting into Dr at higher speeds is harder on it..Iv'e studied the idle circuitry pretty good and got a handle on it..Any techs here? Can the initial 1600 be lowered by ecu adjustment? Will a tech do it ? I also thought about a 1/2 ohm resistor across
 the plug to the water temp sensor. Telling the ecu the water is warmer than it is and shortening the sequence.
I wonder if the ecu is inputting the range and would throw a fault would be thrown at a set resistance..I also wonder if the plunger to the ICV is adjustable ? BTW My neighbors have a newer Focus and Altima and thirs both drop from a fast idle to slow in less than 30 secs and their out of there

What I think is really hard on an engine is not shifting into drive at
the higher RPMs, but the revving of the engine under load when it's
cold, but if she just lets it idle while going down the street and just
give it a tiny bit of throttle she could be on her way to work and using
that gas for transport instead of just warming the engine.

On the down side, if the exhaust system doesn't get hot enough it
will condense water and some acids inside the pipe, which will cause
the exhaust system to rust out, so pay now or pay later

If she doesn't get that thing out on the freeway once in a while to get it good and hot, and keep it at running temp for at least 20/30 miles your gonna have more than rotting exhaust system parts. Gummed up valves, carbon buildup in the heads and cylinders, generally crud buildup in the engine result from never running an engine long enough, to get it hot enough to burn off all the nasty corrosive chemicals created by the combustion process. Do yourself a favor, save a few bucks to spend on a couple gallons of gas to run that rig on the freeway for awhile once each month. In the long run you'll be saving big $ in repairs to your engine.

Better yet, Have your wife ride a bicycle the 2 miles to work. She'll really save money then.

That warm up sequence seems quite long... I'd check and service your ICV and verify it is cycling within the correct parameters. I wonder if some smart fellow 'adjusted' the throttle plate 'idle stop' and/or air leak and you are now out of the window needed for the ECM to operate the system correctly.

I'd check that the thermostat is operating correctly, maybe it is stuck open or someone removed it. I'm not sure that that is that long a warm up time though, what is the ambient temperature?
