Won't start
« on: April 10, 2011, 05:34:42 PM »
Hey everyone,
Just bought an 86 samurai and it is my first. So the problem  having is the sammi just cranks and cranks. It won't fire. New plugs, wires, coil all that and I have spark. For some reason no fuel. After cranking I will pull plugs and there is no gas on them. I have fuel getting to the carb( did check, and drained from bottom). Just wondering if the carb could be so varnished that I can't get any fuel.
I know these forums are the best source of info and help out there, so if anyone has any ideas I'm willing to try anything. Thanks in advance!

Do you still have the "OEM" Hatachi Carb?

If you do:  it could be the "Fuel Metering & shut off valve".
Check to make sure all the plugs coming out the carb are securely pushed together.

The bad news as this is a NON-SERVICEABLE PART.
Mine did not Crap Out completely but was giving me "ISSUES".

I replaced my carb with a Weber 2 bbl kit made for Sammy's.
The only draw back is if you live where you have to have a "Sniff Test" to renew your plates,
these are non-compliant, as these carbs are for Off Road use.

I do still have the stock carb, and am looking at upgrading to a weber at some point.  I just really want to hear it run first.  The nice part is that I live in Idaho, so there are no emissions tests!  I will check my connections again and hope.
Thanks for the advice, I will let you know what I find.

Ok, now I'm going backwards. Working on it tonight and now I have no spark!!  Again new plugs, wires, coil.  Checked ign fuse and it  is ok. Still doesn't seem to be getting fuel to the cylinder to ignite even if I had spark.  Fuel pump will shoot gas across my garage so I don't know where it's going. No puddles.

If it helps, the story I got with the Sammy is that the guys son was driving and blew a radiator hose. He supposedly stoped right away, taped it up, refilled it and drove home approx 1/2 mile. When he got there it was still leaking coolant and they just parked it for a while. Then the father started trying to fix it and it hasn't run since. He supposedly replaced the head gasket and then gave up on it. Looked to me like it was last registered in 09. So it's been sitting a while.

Again thanks in advance for ANY sort of hints or help!

IF the previousowner had the head off you might want to make sure it is timed right so check the timing belt and dist timing. Also if it got hot their could be more things wrong like stuck rings, warped head valve seats....

Most guys would put the head back on with the cam in the 180* out position,
so I would check the valves for firing order and then check your distributor for
the right position.

You can always dump a ounce of gas down the carb or give it a shot of starting
fluid to get the engine to kick off, if either of these don't work you really have
a timing or spark issue, if it does light the engine, check your carb for varnish, tho
2 years isn't too long for it to build up, but there could also be a stuck float in there

Ugh!  Just did a compression test... 30 lbs all the way across the board. Wet tested at 100 lbs. Where do I go from here?  Also still having an intermittent spark problem?

Wet as in oil in the cylinders? you got crap for rings, or the guy way
over heated the engine and it needs to be rebuilt, rings and a hone.

Collapsed rings or carbon buildup from oil neglect

X2 on the rings being cooked. probably need a total rebuild or a different engine.
