There is a notch that the fan belt pulley fits into that I think you can see,
that also lines up with the mark on the cam belt cog

There is a mark on the lower timing belt cog....you can't see the mark without taking the crank pulley off.
There is also a mark on the actual crank pulley (the one the ribbed belts fit on).  It is on the outside lip of the inner pulley....you line up the mark with the 0-20 scale on the timing belt cover (line it up with the zero mark to set the engine at TDC on either cylinder #1 or #4).

Look into the end of the crank where the pulley bolts on, the notch keeps the pulley
from being put on wrong, it only fits one way.

You will need a mirror, or remove the radiator to see it, in fact I remove the radiator just
so I can get at the big crank bolt with an impact, I have an auto trans, so I can't put it
in gear to stop the crank from turning, which makes the bolt difficult to remove.

OK, so.......... Will this work to get the timing belt in the right spot? Line the crank pulley up with the mark at the 0* mark on the cover. Then Line the Cam pulley up with the "E" key down and the outter "E" mark at the notch on the valve cover.

If the timing belt cover is on, if not, the cog notch points at 12 o'clock
and the cam mark point's to 6 o'clock, but I'm not sure on which mark
to use on the cam sprocket, it's been too long.

This configuration is firing #1, and the distributor should be pointing at
about 5 o'clock position on an 8V engine, I haven't don't enough with
the 16V engine to be sure about the distributor position or the cam
sprocket position, it might be the same, but I'm not sure

Yeah the timing belt cover is still on. I know EXACTLY where the cam pulley marks go, I just cant get the cover off to see the crank marks. Thats my dilema.
