I bought a 2010 SX4...
« on: October 11, 2010, 05:22:15 AM »
I got the "almost fully loaded" SX4 Crossover Touring AWD...

And because this is my EIGHTH Suzuki, I got $2,000 in loyalty rebates.

I went WAY out on a limb, and got one with the CVT transmission - every other vehicle I own (including my F-250 tow rig) have manual transmissions.  The CVT takes some getting used to, but it seems to work very well.  The only time I find myself in manual mode, is when I'm downshifting it to reduce speed, either down-hill, or when the speed limit drops.

So far I like it.  I bought it over Labor Day weekend.  When you're used to driving a Sidekick, this thing is like a rocket!  After about 1300 miles, the cumulative gas mileage was 29.1 mpg, back & forth to work - which is surprising, considering there is a 3,500 foot elevation gain/loss in my daily commute.

It came with a surprise, too.  It has the single CD stereo, which SHOULD have come with the 4-speaker system.  Instead, it has the 9-speaker system, that normally comes with the 6-CD changer.  It's not even listed on the invoice.  Go figure.

As of 12/7/2010, I've logged 4,710 miles, and consumed 166.122 gallons of gas, for a cumulative rating of 28.4 MPG.  Total fuel cost is at $436.35, for a cost per mile of 9.3 cents.  My highest MPG for one tank of gas was 33.4 MPG, and my lowest was 25.2 MPG.  I have yet to take it on an extended highway trip.

The Garmin navigation system is...OK.  I don't normally need "directions", but the few times I've used it to go someplace I was unsure of, it worked OK - the voice is pretty lame.  Oh, and the route it tries to send me on from home to work is really odd, so it spends a fair amount of time saying "recalculating".  I also have loaded my MP3's onto it, and use it as an MP3 player.  The audio quality is...fair.  It picks up a lot of engine noise.

So, I took the SX4 to the dealer today, to ask why I haven't received any "discount coupons" through my e-mail, for oil changes.  Their response:  "The first one is free."  OK, that's cool.  Free oil change complete.

It was parked while I was shopping, and when I came out, it had a nice dent in the rear bumper!   :o  Cost to repair:  Almost $1,000 - this is to replace and paint the REAR BUMPER COVER!!!  Fortunately, I have a $250 deductible.

It's good to know what sort of real world mileage you are seeing.  Sucks about the bumper cover though.

Well, she's all fixed up now.  I'll continue to post up my data as I continue driving her.
As of 12/27/2010:

Age:  110 days
Odometer:  5,510 Miles
Total Gallons of Gas:  194.791
Cumulative MPG:  28.3
Cumulative Cost:  $525.35 (Includes "pay at the pump" car washes.)
Cost per Mile:  $0.095
Cost per day:  $4.69

We've finally had some typical "Mountain Winter" weather.  Ice/Snow/Sub-zero temperatures.

She handles well on ice and snow, with no bad habits so far.  I've noticed, that when she's cold she has almost no power in reverse.  Good news:  The defroster is MUCH BETTER than on any of my previous 7 Suzukis (91 4-door Kick, 92 4-door Kick, 2 95 4-door Kicks, 95 2-door kick, 97 4-door Sport, 99 GV).

That's pretty good overall mileage. Most of my '10 SX4's mileage is in the city, so it's a bit lower. We also had a 2009, which we traded in for our '10. Both are good vehicles, but I prefer the new engine/transmission combo.

Well, with the snow and ice we've had for the last few days, I've been using the iAWD a lot.  It seems to have a negative effect on the MPG.  We'll see, next time I fill up.

Well, when she was at 7,261 miles, with a lot of "winter driving", the cumulative MPG is still at 28.1 - and I STILL haven't taken her on a road trip, where I predict the mileage will be at least 32.

She's consumed 257.96 gallons of gas, at a cost of $715.17, or $0.098 per mile.

Time for her second oil change, and I've got a recall notice on the tension adjuster pulley.

So far, I LOVE this thing.  She did really well in snow up to her belly, but did get stuck in hard-packed drifted snow about a foot deep.  Fortunately Mrs. Bobzooki's Grand Vitara had no problem pulling her out.

She rolled over 10,000 miles on the way to work this morning.

As of the last fill-up:

Odometer:  9,942
Latest MPG:  31.0
Cumulative MPG:  28.5
Total cost of Fuel:  $1,029.00
Cost per mile:  $0.104 (unfortunately, this continues to climb, with gas prices)
Cost per day:  $4.64
Average Miles Per Day:  About 45

OK, I've had 4 out of the last 5 tankfuls over 30 mpg.  Here are the cumulative numbers:

Odometer:  11,829
Latest MPG:  30.0
Cumulative MPG (since I bought it):  28.8
Total Cost of Fuel:  $1,264.47
Cost per Mile:  $0.107 - man I'm glad I'm not driving my F-250 at these fuel costs!
Cost per day:  $4.84

Thanks for the continued updates! I have had my SX4 for 6 months now and i really like it! It is outstanding in snow and just a lot of fun for daily driving. I am averaging 26 MPG, but i have a lot of stop and go traffic in my commute and i am a little bit of a leadfoot at times, i am trying to stop that bad habit!  >:D

Apparently the "summer blend" at the gas station has less ethanol than the "winter blend", and now my last four tanks ran 31.7, 32.1, 31.5 and 31.1 MPG.  Cumulative over 12,957 miles is 29.0 MPG.
