Front Diff Material?
« on: July 07, 2004, 10:06:03 AM »
Thought I would fill this new board with a question :)

I have a 2002 XL-7, From what I understand, the front diff housing is made of cast iron, and the cover is made of aluminium?  If anyone knows, correct me if I am wrong.

I am bringing it up because I mentioned this when I was talking to a tech at a dealership, and he said the front diff is made of all cast-iron???? I think the 2004 may be the case, but not pre 2004.

Any info is appreciated.

The earlier XL.7's with automatics still had aluminum housings with a steel 3rd member, with the manuals having steel housing and 3rd member. The housing and third members were upgraded to steel in 2003 for both tranny combos

If you're unsure of the metal, try to stick a magnet on it.

Good Luck, Eric

I know, what's up with that new front end???? :'(

I so hoping for a new '04 but I can't seem to get used to the front on them. I wonder how hard it would be to change that out.

Oh, 2001, auto, mine is aluminum as well.

I have steel ;D
It's not really that hard..I did it.
The only hard part is to install the ring and pinion right.
I actually paid a shop to do it.\
Leonard of Hillsboro. ;D
Good shop
Just not happy from not buying the parts through them.
Next time I will. ;)
