Gas consumption on '04 XL-7
« on: April 20, 2005, 02:06:41 PM »
Hello guys, I've got my '04 XL-7 JLX ( 5 spd. auto + power) since last November and have to admit - just LOVE her! ;) She has 8500 km since then and runs just grate.
Only one thing bothers me, it's her gas consumption.
The best I can made is about 13,5-14 L/100 km in 50/50 driving. I've tried different styles of driving, all the same. :-/ Does it has to be a little less after break-in?
Please share your experience with it.

Ouch, that is quite a lot.
I don't have an Xl-7, but what type of driving do you do? When you say 50/50, what do you refer to? If it is highway/city, I would say it's a lot, but if it is something like city/offroad, I'd say it's normal.
Where are you from?

I drive it easy on accelerator in the city, mostly to work and back to home( 40-70 km/h). During weekend some highway driving ( 110-120 km/h), 50/50 is city/hwy driving. I'm in Toronto.

Remember your running winter forumlated gas right now up there. That stuff burns quick because of the anti-freeze agents in it.

Best over winter for me was 22.8mpg, last summer I was averaging 25mpg on the hwy, 18 in the city and thats cruising around 75mph. If I can find a damn air filter it'll get better (nobody makes the filters for the 04's and newer XL7's other than Suzuki). I also run synthetic oil (everything was swapped to synth at 3100 miles).

I hope you are right, xoffroad, about winter fuel here in Toronto, will check it again during summer time.
I'm planning to replace with K&N filter too. Is it something different in filters shape for 2001-2003 and 2004-2005 models? It's basically the same engine. K&N makes it for XL-7. I run Mobil 1 synthetic in engine also.

Well, I;m not going to try to convert the numbers here, but in the winter we were averaging about 18, and now the last two tanks I've been averaging 20.5 now that its spring, hth.  Dave ;D

Yep, filters are different. Spent last weekend making two trips to the parts store. 1 to get the filter for an 04, 2nd to return it. Too small and it's square where as the 04's have a funky tab to the one side and are a bit larger.

I'm filling up today, again, and my trip is reading 264 so I should be around 21mpg, which is good considering I've been doing nothing but city for the last 3 days. Man I wish the tank was larger but it's not as bad as my Jeep (170 miles on a 20 gallon tank-yea that's less than 8mpg).

Another problem with winter (colder temps) is the engine's warm up time is longer which requires more fuel.

Last year we made a couple round trips to SC from Pa. Roughly 1700 miles. Best I did was 25.5 mpg, that was in SC on 95 where it's flat pulling 80mph with the cruise set. The truck was also loaded down with 4 fullsize adults and luggage stacked in the rear, A/C on. Worst was the leg between DC and Richmond and I think even that was 20mpg. My Grand Cherokee's best on the same trip was 17mpg and that was stock! My wifes Lexus ES300 does 27 on the same trip so the XL7 being a 3800lb 4wd SUV getting that kind of mileage is AWSOME!

EDIT: Just filled up over lunch. 21.8mpg. It's coming up even for city. That's an 04' with 20k miles (yes I drive alot) and it's only 8 months old.

hi all, i run an 05 xl7, semi syn quaker in engine, full syn in diffs, at 12000 k's, the very best i get is 10liters / 100k's, mostly 11liters/100k's with speeds not in excess of 105km/hr, stickly highway.  from there on, it's down hill. ::)

13.5 to 14 L/100Km  is about 12-13 gallons per 62 miles
or around 18-20 MPG so it looks like your are right in the
ballpark for that vehicle.

I would suggest reducing your speed to 110 Km/H
which is about 68-69 MPH to save fuel, funny how
pushing 120 Km/H sucks more fuel   ;D

33k mile update on my 04. Well I'm getting about 20-22 now. But that's with 225/70-16 tires on and not taking into account the change in odo reading. Were switched over to winter gas so I was expecting it to drop, nothing yet.

18 was the worst this summer. 23 was the best, again on I95 in SC with the A/C on and running about 85mph steady. New tires were on for that trip so that would explain the decent mileage at higher speed (less RPM I guess).

I'm gonna take a stab and say I'm expecting to get 16-17 city this winter. But things changed and we moved farther into the suburbs, yet only 18miles from RC Off-road Park! So my trip to work and back is now 48 miles each day all hwy.
