Sidekick Fender Flares
« on: March 12, 2011, 11:57:12 AM »
I think that I've done a comprehensive search regarding the current state of the market regarding fender flares for the Sidekick.

EGR stopped production of Flares in 2007 and I haven't been able to find any suppliers who still have an inventory.

There are flares that can be found on e-Bay for the special Vitara models that were sold non-US but those models had modified gas filler doors and the flares will cover part of the US spec door. Modifying US doors is a major task.

Flares are manufactured in Iceland for the Sidekick but I have not been able to find the manufacturer despite following several leads.

J.C. Whitney sells flare material and several Sidekick owners have posted that they have used it but none have posted details as to which type they used and I haven't been able to find photos of the final installation. Reading reviews on Whitney's website I really don't want to drill holes to install them because of rust concerns.

Other "universal" solutions include Phoenix USA, similar to J.C. Whitney, and other fiberglass, carbon fiber and other material universal kits found at www.bodykits.com that look like they would require a fair amount of work.

Can anyone add to this discussion?

Ah, nice.  He used to just give you the diagram you needed to cut the gas door to match.

I use the JC Whitney ones, available at http://www.jcwhitney.com/rubber-fender-extensions-fender-flares/p2008750.jcwx?filterid=j1

Just the standard duty ones so you have room to rivet them to the fenders.  I updated my old installation post with some working pictures:

I found some koi ponds at Low's for cheep last summer and cut them up into fender flares and it worked really well, you can see pics on the Toyota 4.0 build thread.  Some things I would warn you about, don't get anything to stiff, they will either crack or dent your tub should you get to close to an obstacle.  The JC Whitney flares look pretty good but aren't real wide, I was worried that the wider ones would droop over time, that is why I went with the plastic koi pond vs the rubbery JC Whitney style.  I was in Iceland recently and saw some really cool ones on sidekicks, there are places that will send them to you but it's hard to find them and they are killer expensive because the exchange rate is not good for us right now and shipping is very pricey.  A while ago I found a Suzuki 4x4 club in Iceland that had a good web page and forum, depending on how bad you wanted some you might be able to talk to some of the club members for help.  On a brighter note almost everyone in Iceland speaks English so if you are able to find someone to talk to at least you won't need an interpeter.

I bought a set from a dude in England, gas door does not need modified, and you can find them as "wheels arches" on Ebays England website

Those are NICE! But I saw another member here smack his up against a tree and shatter it. I use the good ' JCwhitney ones and they work well, stay flexable, don't droop, and you can rub them against all kinds oif stuff with no ill effects. I did drill to mount mine, used stainless screws, and sealed each hole with silicone. Hasn't rusted anything yet.
The usual stuff, and 2nd generation Air to liquid intercooled TURBOCHARGER

They are still "coming soon". The British E-Bay ones are no longer listed and I haven't found any Iceland Companies that would respond to my e-mail inquries that have them for the Sidekick.

The E-Bay seller was very helpful but there is no way that the gas door can be modified so that it will work given the hinge location.>:(

I am going the super cheap route, I have a length of clear plastic curtain from a wharehouse doorway and will  merely cut it to length with a slight curve outwards to cover the tire width and attach it to the bottom of the lip to satisfy Johnny Law.

Hi

I live in Iceland and have fender flares from SAMTAK in Hafnarfjordur (a town very close to the city capital of Reykjavik). They are very hard to contact by email so I would not recommend that route. The phone numbers for them are +354-565-1670 and +354-565-1850 also mobile phone numbers +354-892-7995 and +354-898-7995. This is their main website:

http://www.samtak.is/

and for the fender flares:

http://www.samtak.is/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=55&Itemid=79&lang=is

Regarding the exchange rate being bad... Yes it is extremely bad for us to purchase in USD (Dollars) but at the same time very GOOD for US buyers to purchase items from Iceland. The shipping or sending cost can be pretty high though, but in my opinion these flares are very functional, very nice looking, well built and can be repaired by just about any fiberglass "inclined" person. I hope this helps you out with your decision on what to install on your vehicle.

If you are interested, here is a link to the Icelandic Suzuki club, I am a member of.

I link to the first pictures of my Suzuki after I innstalled the 33" tires, I have done more since these were taken.
