MK1 body to MK2 chassis body swap
« on: October 04, 2011, 07:41:28 AM »
Hey guys, I've got a 96' Tracker convertible with only 71,000 miles on it.  It's SUPER rusty, but runs spectacularly.  I can't find any MK2 bodies to swap onto it though.  Any chance a MK1 body would have the same dashboard mounts, and everything?  I know it's going to be annoying getting the MK2 convertible top stuff to work, I was just wondering if I was also going to have to mod the body to get my interior in it too :)

I don't know if it will help you all that much, but I'm in the process of swapping a '93 4-door body onto a '98 frame.  I'm also swapping over all the wiring and the dashboard so that I can have airbags (that, and all of the '93 HVAC stuff was full of mouse nests while the '98 parts are pretty clean).  There are a few differences in the bracketry, but for the most part it seems like the major mounting points are the same.  The bracket on the firewall that the steering column mounts to is different from the '93 to the '98, so I used a spot weld cutter to remove the '98 piece and welded it to the '93 firewall - nothing major, it was very easy to locate on the '93 sheet metal as the stampings (of the firewall) are pretty much identical.  <--- if that sentence isn't clear, don't worry.  It will be once you get everything apart and take a look at it.

Basically, it's not a 100% straightforward swap, but shouldn't be too difficult if you can cut and weld a couple small pieces.
