Soft Top Hardware question
« on: December 20, 2010, 06:26:56 PM »
New member here from Western North Carolina.

I just purchased a 1990 Sidekick 2 door 4x4.  It came with a new soft top that was half-assed installed.

It looks like the two rear window wire frames that hold the bottom and front edges of the window have a plastic piece that goes at the bottom rear corner of the frame.  One of the plastic pieces is broken (possibly at a screw hole), the other is completely missing.  I am guessing that these fasten somehow into the body, perhaps with a (missing) screw.

Any idea how to get replacements or perhaps a good photo so I could fabricate a couple?

Also, it looks like there is a missing rod along the lower edge of the removable rear window.  Looking at the design of the lower edge of the window, I am guessing it is just a straight piece of 3/16 or 1/4" steel rod with some kiind of cover over the ends to keep it from puntching thru the fabric.   I would greatly appreciate if someone could confirm this and give me an accurate measurement for the length and diameter of the rod and how the ends are covered.  Am I correct in thinking that the cloth strap with the snap fastener on the inside top center of the rear door is how this is held down?

Thanks for the help and I look forward to participating here on the Zuki Forum.

Give Hawk Suzuki a call, they can hook you up with the missing pieces.

For the rear you are sort of right There is a bar that goes across but there should be some clips on the tailgate they clip onto.  Only they don't seem to work very well.  BRD HNTR just put a couple of cam style latches to lock the rear down.

Thanks Drone637,

I have sent an inquiry to Hawk about the side window frame parts.

That draw latch rig from BRD HNTR looks like the perfect solution.  I'll be ordering a couple tomorrow.  From that thread it looks like the rod on the lower edge of the rear window is fiberglass.  Rounding the ends on a fiberglass rod would probably solve the punch-through problem.

Could someone measure the diameter of that rod and let me know.  I should be able to pick up the fiberglass rod somewhere locally without special ordering a Suzuki or Geo part.

Thanks again!!

I found a 1/4" fiberglass rod at Lowes.  It was attached to a driveway reflector and only cost a couple of bucks.  I cut it to length and rounded the ends.

I recieved the draw latches and installed them as described on BRD HNTR's thread and it works great!!
