Grinding noise
« on: October 30, 2011, 10:18:25 AM »
I have a terrible "grinding sound and feel in my front end...kinda feels like drivers side but not real sure....I suspect a bad wheel bearing but I don't want to start forking out money and replacing parts plus a special tool I have to buy, without being sure....What is the best way (if possible) to test for a bad wheel bearing without removing the wheels, hubs, rotors brakes...etc..etc ...

Jack the car up & spin the wheel - if you have manual hubs, unlock them.

Also with the zuki jacked up , grab the tire at the top and bottom and shake, move the tire up and down then grab the wheel on the side and try to move it side to side. If you see or feel any movement at the wheel bearing area then you probably need a wheel bearing.

The wheel bearing should not move in any direction and when spinning the wheel it should not make any noise. Growling noises are bad. If you turn left or right, and the noise gets louder one of the ways, when your driving your zuki, the nosiest side probably has a bad wheel bearing.  Brakes also make noise sometimes but hopefully you can tell the difference, I am sure you can :)

I hope this makes sense, Halloween and all I have been drinking adult beverages. :)

My experience has been the reverse - noisy when going left is a bad rightside bearing & vice versa - the turn causes weight transfer in the opposite direction and the additional weight makes the noise worse.

I figured it out...It was bad bearings for sure....I took the wheels off and axle hubs apart and the bearing pieces fell to the floor....They disintegrated ...iccckkk... I am shopping for parts while waiting on my axle tool to come in that I ordered... Should have it up and running by the weekend....I also have to change a torn cv boot that I found while inspecting bearings....Joy joy joy....I'll get it fixed just in time to take it out in the woods and tear it up again.....lol
