wont maintain steady idle?
« on: March 19, 2012, 03:20:32 AM »
1997 Suzuki sidekick sport 1.8L 158,912miles
Starts fine once warmed up wont maintain idle.
Once I stop at light the idle bounces below 800 and cuts off sometimes I can save it if I tap the gas pedal.
If I stop and let it run it will cut off. I cleaned E G R this weekend still same thing. Didn't improve. Visual inspection vacation lines they seem fine no leak sounds.

Any ideas. Thanks

When I'm in the parking lot and I put the car in reverse It will stall sometimes.
When I'm on the highway 2000-2500 rp m's feels like a miss. But no engine light comes on.
I put the reader on got no codes. Pull MAF to make sure SES bulb in dash works (it does ).

Mine was running crappy so I:

Checked and corrected the vac line routing...better.
Trimmed the ends off all the vac lines... better.
Adjusted the loose TPS...ah, much better!!

I was speaking to a guy at work about my car trouble. He suggested I unplug the electrical connection from my MAP sensor and if the car starts it means be that its bad.
Does this sound right?

Drove about 20miles with my MAP unplugged seemed to run better.

Does  this mean new MAP will fix my idle woes?

In your first posst you said you have a MAP, do you have a MAP or a MAF?

MAF is at front of intake
MAP is out the back of intake comes off a small hose and mounts to firewall.
MAP is the one I disconnected.

When I looked at the sensor location sheet those are the names that went to the sensors.

Do you have CEL on, or even a CEL light when the ignition switch is in the accesory mode (first increment prior to starter engagement)?

The ses light came on this morning. Put my reader on (basic one only reads and erase doesnt give info while driving ) it gave 6 codes
P1408,301,302 it gave the same 3 twice.
Did a search found out that 1408 is MDP circuit fault. Which also means map sensor fault. Fortunately I've already ordered a new map sensor it will be here monday.

swapped out the MAP sensor its still surging when i stop and it feels like its missing (it is missing it gave a miss code this morning) between 2000-3000 rpm.
when it warms up it runs a bit better.
i raised the idle so it wouldnt stall when i put it in reverse(doesnt always work)

dont know if it matters but when i have radio, headlights and heater blower on the revs bounce also.

That sounds like you might have a grounding issue, if the number of electronics on affects things.

Just take off the ground wires, clean them up.  Make sure you have a good ground cable going from your battery to the block and to the body.
