I went to get a coffee today and saw this nice tin top in the lot. I was hoping I would see the owner and he would say " I was just about to put it on craigslist ", no such luck, he just picked it up a few months ago. It was pretty nice, very clean inside and low miles.

Looking for the right sammy is like looking for a wife.  Eventually you stumble upon the right one...

I think I'm going to look at an 86 tomorrow, is 159,000mi. alot for a samurai that's priced around $3000. Is that a lot of miles for the drivetrain or can these motors go 300,000mi. with just regular maintenance. I'm a little disappointed to find out the owner has only had it for a short time, sounds like he did a few things to it and is flipping it. It would be nice to know the maintenance history but Ill check it out anyway.

3000 is not a bad price around here.

in my experience, 159k is about what you can expected from an engine and tranny.  Sure there are some tha say they have a bunch more miles, but I have had several that needed rebuilding at 160.  the good thing is there are alot of running sammy motorts for sale that have been replaced by 1.6.  Shoot, I got one I can't sell for 200 bucks.

Id say until last week, Id never seen either wear out when maintained.  but I just pulled a rear out of my kick to change the gears and found that I just caught it in time.  the side carrier bearings were gone.  Ive had this car since a very young age and maintained it for 145,000 miles, but I have flat towed it for 25,000 miles behind the RV.

Well, I checked it out and test drove it. The exterior was straight but it did have a couple areas of body filler. 2 were on the rear next to the hinges, an ugly attempt at rust repair I'm guessing. Another spot was where the hood bumper goes, center above the windshield. Other than that it had some bubbling in the rear door jamb? area and various small surface rust type stuff. Inside was pretty clean, carpet was in great shape. I was surprised to see the headliner was in really good shape and even the front and rear seats weren't too bad, just dirty or stained. Panels were the plastic replacements. Everything seemed to work inside except a couple of instrument lights, 4x light and heater/ac control lights. I wish I was more familiar with how these should feel, to me it seemed to have a lot of play in the steering and shifting through the gears sorta reminded me of a volkswagon.

in my opinion, I would pic a one that doesn't have rust.  we are in California there are alot of cars here that don't have rust.  thats one of the positives of living here...

I agree,I could probably get him to take $2700 but I hate rust and even though its pretty minor I would rather not mess with it. Here's one that's been for sale awhile now, unfortunately in my opinion It's way over priced even if it is super clean. http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/cto/2099858161.html  I would like to take a look but it would be pointless, I'm not looking to spend anything close to what he's wants. Maybe he can keep the bumper, winch and highlift and nock off a couple grand.

Just wanted to update, that white tin top that I saw in that parking lot a year ago (pic above), I ended up buying it. I won't go into how but I thought It was a funny coincidence that I ended up with that one.  It seemed nicer when someone else owned it, I have another thread with some of the issues it has.

That's always the way.  I picked up an old car I used to have, it drove much worse then I remembered.  :)

After looking for a month or so I got one for $900, but it needed a motor and was rough on the inside. Al but the hood was clean and it had 3 tops with it and alum wheels. I have about $1500 invested now with motor and lift parts I got for it.

I saw many in Nor Cal are for well under $2000 that were stock and very clean (pics and description).

Anyway, for CL try "searchtempest" which lets you search CL a lot easier.
I think I had a motorcycle that was heavier!!
