Looking for best susp lift kit for 88 Sami

Just got me a 88 Sami for hunting camp.  I've look through this site as best I can.  What I am looking for is an article or actual hands on knowledge comparing the suspension lift kits for '88 Samurai.  Of course all the home sites swear theirs is the best and there are no problems and are easy to install, etc.  I am wanting a good suspension lift kit and plan to install myself.  And while looking I see several different kinds and combos (i.e. - susp lift, reverse shack and spring over shackle).

 My only experience in lift kits is I put a 4" body lift on my Nissan 4X4 about 15 years ago.  I'm pretty sure I can tackle the install, but I need a no nonsense from the professionals (you guys) on what works and does work; and which company / type of susp lift is the way to go.  Thanks!

Can someone push me in the right direction

How much lift are you looking to get?  For a light adventure style rig the OME 2.5" lift is a great choice.  Softer springs then stock and gives you room to fit 30" tires.  Combined with a locker in the back you will be able to go just about anywhere.

I'm really not sure on how high of a lift.  I guess it depends on pricing.  If I'm gonna pay about the same for a 2.5" as a 4" or 5", I'd probably go with a 4" or 5" - unless the 4 and 5 inch lifts require significant mods and lead to problems with sterring/drive shaft problems etc.  And what lock are you referring to on the back.  A locking differential?  What exactly does the lock do and is it benificial.  I am basically using the vehicle at hunting camp do get through some creek beds (some wet / some dry) and off road navigating through tight areas.  Thanks for the help and advice.

There are three types of traction aids currently available for the Samurai.  What they basically do is make it so both rear tires turn at the same rate, so that way you have more traction.  This is because the stock differential transfers power to which ever tire turns the easiest in order to make it go around corners.  Basically they break down like this:

Mini-Spool - Cheap, but not the greatest on road.  Locks both rear tires up all the time, like a welded diff.

Lockright Style - Not quite as cheap as the spool, but if setup properly a solid compromise.  Will allow one tires to turn freely when not on the throttle, so it just takes some getting used to while on the road.

ARB - Has a switch to go from an open diff to a spool.  The best of both worlds, but is the most expensive.  But if you wheel with one, you won't want to go back.

If you want to go with the SPOA lift, which gives you 5" or so of lift, I recommend going with the Sky Manufacturing Stage 2 lift.  If gives you everything you need, 1/2 of the High steer kit that makes driving still safe and the wrap-around spring mounts that help your rear axle from being destroyed by spring wrap.  You will need to do some welding but it's a solid kit.

But going to 31" tires is a pretty big jump.  You will need new gears in the T-Case or differentials to turn the larger tires and depending on your driving style you might start breaking axles.

Have you tried wheeling your rig stock?  It might be that you just need some rocker guards and under-armor to protect the t-case.

Solid advice I'll check out the lift kit and the diffs.  And about the 31's ...ahhh I did think they were that big but if it leads to changing gears etc.  I'll probably back it down a little to keep from all those mods.

Ah, I just mean going out with your Samurai without any modifications.  Due to the small dimensions and light weight a Samurai can go a lot of places you can't in most unmodified vehicles.  It could be that a locker and some good 235/75 R15 tires, the largest you can put on without a lift but does require some front bumper trimming, is all you need for your hunting trips.

If your going around rocks though, I do recommend getting some armor.  Rockers, the part under the door, do tend to get smashed up.  And the transfer-case hangs slightly below the frame so it can get caught on rocks.  The 'snatch' series from Zuk's Off-Road is a solid choice and makes removing the transfer case easier.

If 30" tires is the most you are looking to put on, the 2.5" lift with one of the 4:1 transfer case gear sets is a great setup.  It gives you lower gears off-road and allows you to run the larger tires without much impact on power in high range.  Here is a picture of a Samurai with that setup:



This one also has the 1.6l engine conversion.  But that can wait until you get really hooked.  :)

Awesome.  I am going to have minor surgery next week.  But the Doc says I'll be good to go in a month.  So I plan on picking up my Sami early Jan (It's at a friends place down the road).  I'll send pics and by then I'll have a better idea of what I'm going to do as far as mods.  Thanks for all the advice and wisdom.  I'm sure I'll be back with questions and to show off my Sami!

I got my sammi for the same reason and it fit into my 23ft toy hauler  :laugh: Great for hunting or toting the kids around fishing.

I got a locker and 3 inch springs for $300 and an 8v for $100 (by the time the doner was gone)

All I need now is a set of gears for the tcase and I am set. I like the idea of 4.9's but 4.16s are much cheaper.

With the 1.6 the 4.16:1 kit will probably be more then enough.  :)

I don't know, I had minor surgery once and it took me almost twenty years before I could use it!
1987,1988,1988,1990 samurai's,  1953 m38a1,  1996 x-90,blue.1996 x-90 red.1994 2 door tracker.   only Dead Fish go with the flow.                No Hairy Nosed Wombats were ran over on the trail today.       My ZUK is Xenophobic.
