limited slip or selectable for rear diff on 88 samurai
« on: April 03, 2020, 05:43:07 PM »
Greetings and salutations from the newest member (excited). Just a little back ground. Bought my girl an 88 Sammy to hunt with and a little trail riding with known bad rear diff (NO OIL!!). Got it out today....3,73 (11 tooth pinion (BUSTED) 41 tooth ring gear (CHEWED UP). Looking to replace it with a limited slip or selectable. The selectable (1st choice) are WAYYYY to much, but the limited slip from Russia looks promising. I also think i should replace bearings and seals. Annnnyyyy way. Need some advice since Im new to the Zuki world for best places to buy from, hints on best options etc. etc.. BTW.... We are on lock down here in Tn. so I got some time and will rely on delivery....Thank you in advance from your humble newbie.

Just be aware that the limited slip & selectable lockers generally don't come with a ring & pinion, you are expected to transfer the ones you have, so you're going to have to start by finding a good used diff - yes it would be a good idea to fit new bearings & seals whilst you're in there, especially if you're not familiar with the unit you're dealing with.

Something else to be aware of is that ring & pinion gears are matched sets and should not be separated - you can't use a pinion  from one diff and a ring from another, even if they are identical units, also setting up the rear end gears after bearing replacement is a task that requires specialist tools, knowledge and experience.

One last thing - if I'm not mistaken the Samurai front & rear diffs are interchangeable, front diffs are generally less worn than rear, so bear that in mind when shopping for used parts.

Thank you. My plan was to replace the bearings, axle seals and buy new ring gear and pinion (3.73), then put in a new diff.  If you have any suggestions where i might find this elusive 3.73 ring and pinion and a reasonable diff it would be much appreciated.

I'm have my doubts on the availability of new ring & pinion gears for a thirty year old car, it might be easier to source good used, but either way, try the folks at Low Range Off Road, if they can't supply, they should be able to point you in the correct direction

I have lucked up and found a whole 3rd on ebay that is 3.73. Otherwise you are exactly right, there is no such thing as 6.9" 3.73, however i could find plenty of the 4.57 and 5.38's.. Thank you for the help
