Wheels
« on: October 27, 2011, 10:51:17 AM »
I've done some searches on wheels and all i can find are discusions on 15" wheels on a Grand Vitara. My question is what wheels are people running on there trackers I am putting a 2" suspension lift and a 2" body lift in. My tracker has factory 15" wheels on it. I am going to run 31's so width back spacing and manufacturer. Also how much rub are you getting. I was going to run my samurai rims with small spacers but from what I've read the are to narrow.

The front brakes on the Suzukis are different than the Chevy's.  The front calipers are rather wide and force the wheel to have to have a sort of "built in spacer" on them.  Look at the back of the wheel where the lug stud holes are and you'll see.

Guys have run aftermarket 15" steel wheels but as far as I know have always had to run wheel spacers to keep the spokes of the wheels off of the calipers.  I even tried some Cragar Soft 8 steel wheels in 16x7 on my ex's Grand Vitara and they wouldn't fit for the same reason.

BTW a 245/75R16 is about a 31x9.5R16 and a 235/85R16 is about a 31x9R16.

Sorry, misread your post.

You'd want a 6 or 7" wide wheel with about 3-4" of backspacing and enough cant on the spokes to clear the calipers.  My money would be on needing to be steel wheels because aluminum would have been too thick to clear.  Beyond that, I can't help ya much.  Let us know what you find though.  I've got fantasies of running a wider wheel on mine.

I have thought about finding a set of ZR2 or LT package 15x6 aluminum rims and running those.

If your serious about 4x4'ing then you should try to stick to narrower rims. If your rim is too wide you gotta worry about popping a bead when your running low psi. Just my two cents.

how narrow of a rim can I run 31" on every thing I have read say 7" to 8" rim in your opinion is a 8" to wide because I would like to air down on the trails. and what offset should i be looking for 3.75" - 4" on a 8" rim.

8" would be the widest I'd go.  7" would be best probably and 6" would work.

For any of them 3.75-4" would be a good backspacing as it's close to the factory setup.  Keeps the stuff off of the suspension and frame as much as possible.

Be aware that the wider the rim the more the tire is going to stick out away from the suspension and possibly run afoul the body while turning/under compression.

Personally I'd find a set of 15x7's with 4" of backspacing.

ThanX that's the kinda of answer I've been looking for. I don't want to buy rims to find out there was a better choice and have to buy another set.

Don't do what I did, I have gone from 18x9 back to 15x8.  I have notched the frame and had to grind the front frame cross member and the wide tires rub even with 1 inch spacers, the mods cost more than the second set of wheels and tires.  Now I have 15x8 Soft 8's with 31x10.50 and a set of pizza cutters, stock 15x5.5 with 29 inch TSL's that perform in 2WD like you would not believe.
The tires are so wide they run the rear wheel liner and spring tower, now I like the look of the Soft 8's over the big wheels.

No, I run without spacers on the 15 x 8's but I run the spacers on the skinnies just to get them "out".  I will try to get a picture, I think the rims have JJ stamped on them, bought them second hand so I never verified back spacing.

HERE IS WHAT I FOUND DOING A QUICK SEARCH
Rim Contour / Bead Profile Designations:
Wheels will have a letter designation for their contour or the expected tire bead and rim shape.
Some possible contour designations are J, JJ, K, JK, B, P, and D
Common (and generally interchangeable) wheel contour designations are J, JJ, and JK.
J is the most common type for most automotive rims
JJ is common on 4x4 vehicles
Basically the rim contour and bead profile specify the shapes of the rim flange and the bead area.
You generally want to stick with something the same or close to what you have, assuming the same tires.
That is a given tire is made to mount on a certain type of wheel; diameter and contour code being most critical.
