Tracker blues!
« on: June 25, 2010, 01:39:18 PM »
I have a friend that has an 2000 Chevy Tracker 2.0  5 speed that is acting up!  When u drive it for a while and cut it off it will not crank back up unless it cools down.  If you can get it cranked it seems to miss a little for a few seconds.  Other than that is runs great!   thanks

I would suspect a crank position sensor is on its way out. Does it throw a code?  I don't have experience with problems on a tracker with this but I've had similar problems with other cars.  Drive it for a while and get it to cut out then cool off the sensor with some water or compressed air and see if it starts up faster than it has been.  I'm not sure where the crank sensor is, but it must be lower down on the main block.

My second guess would be a cam sensor - try the same thing there.

I would guess it's the cam sensor on the back of the head ,try pouring water on it when it cuts out ,it should start and run right after. The 2.0 can run without a crank sensor so I don't think that is what it is and you have to pull the tranny out just to see it.

I'd go with johndb - not only is it a known problem of the 2.0 Trackers - it's a lot easier to verify the cam position sensor - just stick a wet rag on it (it's at the back of the exhaust cam) when the engine dies.
