cruise control stopped working,it turns on at the dash when the motor is first started, but it turns off as soon as you let the clutch out and car starts moving. cannot find any literature on the cruise control. has anyone had this problem? any comments will be appreciated.

There should be two switches above the clutch pedal - one is a safety switch that requires the clutch be depressed before you can start the engine, the other disengages the cruise control when the clutch is depressed - that second switch would be my prime suspect.

I may have documentation on the cruise control - what year and vehicle are we discussing?

Edit.

One of the FSM supplements I have does cover cruise control and a quick glance suggests that what you are describing IS normal - depressing the clutch cancels cruise control - it also says that cruise can be re-engaged by delecting ACCEL/RESUME provided the speed is greater than 25 mph.  I can't comment personally as I've never driven a manual transmission with cruise control.

Just as Fordem points out...in other words, you need to get in top gear, clutch OUT and THEN set the cruise.  ;)

its a 99 grand vitara. When i am at highway speed say 40 or more the dash switch will not turn on, the only time i can get it to turn on is when i start the vehicle after it has been shut off. then it is only till i start moving a small distance, it just shuts off and it will not come on again.

I got ya' now. That is a different scenario than what I was picturing from your initial post. Then you DO have a cruise control system glitch as opposed to a procedural error.

The clutch switch is a pretty stout and simple component. UNLESS you have been up under there for some reason and disturbed it, I doubt that is the problem area.

Have you checked all fuses? Did you work on and disturb any under hood intake / throttle area components? Messed with any transmission related items such as the speed sensors? Maintenance of any kind?

The cruise control documentation that I have does not cover a 99 - just 01's and later, and I suspect there are several differences between the two versions.

Actually it went out about 8 or 9 months ago, at the time the only thing i did was changed the oil.things were working real good. I have checked the fuses and they seem ok. I have tried to procure literature for this vehicle and all i can find is for the older suzukis.

My hard copy SQ416/SQ420/SQ625 Service Manual Volume 1 of 2, has an in depth 21 page look at the Cruise Control System in section 8E. I believe that it should be the SAME manual that is available here for free...

Thanks for the download website. I downloaded the link you sent me, it had just about everything electrical, but they skipped section 8 E. I guess they do not want you to work on the cruise control.

I had a feeling that would happen - I'm not certain what you get with that link - but I thought it was the same soft copy set that I have, which covers several years, but does not have 8E for a 99, it may have 8E for a 2000 though.
