2002 Tracker A/C issue PLEASE HELP!
« on: May 22, 2009, 03:37:49 PM »
My Gf's tracker compressor stopped cycling then was running continuos when the ac button was pressed. I put two cans of freon in and half way through the second can it started cycling then it quit. Now it will start to cycle then kick off. Then kick off and on every ten seconds. It puts out no cool air. I am not sure if the compressor is shot or the AC control module? We are on a fixed income and cannot afford too much. Anyone experience this or have a solution? thank you in advance, Chad

May be a dumb question but... did you use a hose with a pressure guage in it when you loaded the coolant?  If not, could you have over pressured the cooling system lines and locked it up?

Sounds like you've got a MASSIVE leak and she's cycling on the low pressure switch.  :-X

Without hooking up a set of gauges to the low and high side, it will be difficult to better determine the problem.

Have you found the liquid line sight glass (off the condenser) and is it full of bubbles or apparently dry / empty when the compressor IS running? If so, you've got leaks.

Any sign of reefer OIL at connections (hose, sensor, couplings, compressor)?

Here's the update. Unfortunatly no I didn't use a guaged hose. I do have complete guage set at my parents but they live over two hours away and I won't be able to get it until tomorrow. Now what odd is it does work for about 2-3 minutes. It blows out very cold air and then when the the compressor does start to "cycle" it just kicks on an off every ten seconds but does not produce anything cold. I know that is a little different but at least I know it still has its charge and the compressor is somewhat working. When I get my guages I'll figure out the pressure. Thank you for the suggestions.

It's not the compressor.

She's short on and leaking freon.  ;)

The only other things that comes to mind is IF somebody has been in to the system already and putz'd it up:

Air / non condensable gases present in the system, dehydrator or screen plugged up. MAYBE a thermostat issue, but I doubt it.

Whew that's refreshing I was cringing at the whole 400.00 compressor. What do you think of re O-ringing the system and changing out the filter? I have the equipment to suck it down and gauges to recharge.

You need to do the basics first. Gauges / pressure check. 30-40 PSI on the low side, 150+ on the high depending on heat load.

Search for leaks. Electronic leak detector or dye in the system.

Great I will get on that tomorrow. Leak detection is going to be a little harder. Everything is so tight under there. LOL Just put on a new belt a few months ago and WOW I still have scars. We really appreciate your input/help. Chad and Shannon

There is a "dual pressure" switch in that system - it detects both high and low pressure and locks the compressor out.

My suspicion is that you now have too much refrigerant in the system and when the compressor cycles in, and the pressure builds, it trips the high pressure switch, the compressor cuts out and the pressure drops allowing the switch to close and the compressor to kick in again.  Part of this suspicion comes from the fact that it will run for several minutes when the system is first turned on, the internal pressure does increase as the system warms up.

Find the switch (it should be near the receiver dryer) and wire a 12V test lamp across it - if the switch is closed (as it should be) the lamp will stay off, so if you see the lamp flashing on when the compressor goes off, you know you've found the cause.

I picked up my guages and I do not have  high side hose. But the low side reads right at 35 when the compressor kicks on. and it goes up to around 40-42 when it kicks off. Now she droive it today and the compressor sounds like it has marbles rattling around inside of it?? I will check the switch per your instrcutions. Thank you all!

I had to replace my compressor off my 02 XL7 when she reached near 100k miles. For $900 or so (discountacparts.com), you get a new compressor, expansion valves and dryer.

Come to researching the problem, the mfr of the ac compressor had issues with the rings on the piston. In time, they deteriorate and come apart. I had same issues with cycling and blowing cold as well as the bad noise. In time, the compressor will freeze up with debri and you won't be able to run the front window defroster or ac. I also had rear ac so had get the whole system flushed.

With a certified ac installer, it was another $600 to get it all replaced and installed.

My compressor on my Tracker went out |removethispart|@ 95K.  Had it replaced with a Mitsubishi made unit for $600 and another $325 for the install and charging the system:  $925 total.
