Service Engine Soon!!
« on: December 17, 2005, 08:56:05 AM »
2004 Vitara V/6 9,300 mi. Light came on |removethispart|@ 9,200mi. Checked all levels OK! Fuel consumption 21 mpg. Had aftermarket lock gas cap on since new, replaced the stock cap-No Help!  I have changed oil twice, last time |removethispart|@ 9,000. Does the odometer generate this alarm???? Is there a reset ritual that I should have performed?? This unit sets just above sea-level 100ft. from saltwater, & it has been very damp here. (rain&fog) I am & old guy & hate to let something like this beat me, I know you young bucks out there have a clue!! Or should I take it the 80 mi. round trip to the dealer Mon. am????? OR FORGET ABOUT IT????

Got an Advanced Auto or AutoZone around you?  Both of those companies (and some other car parts places) will usually have a code scanner and run the codes for you.  Just go with them when they run the codes, watch them, and they should give you a print out listing the codes.  Something has sent up an error signal to the OBD-II computer system and the light is it's way of letting you know about it.  You need a proper scanner to read it.

Make sure your gas cap is tight.  May sound dumb but it will trip a code off.

No it's not dumb! I got some brand name fuel, & added a can of Seafoam(shrimp boats here use it in their diesel) Put about 70 mi. on it, & on the way to the Dlr. the alarm cancled!! Must have got some bad fuel or maybe a loose cap!
THANKS!!
