Differential Fill Plug
« on: August 19, 2012, 11:15:45 AM »
Had to chizzle out the diff fill plug and ended up doing some serious damage to the seal on the plug. Anyone know where I could find a new one at? Thanks!!!

will it  screw back in?

if so, just get some permatex for gear oil and seal until you find another.

it will be available at dealership, junkyard, etc.

tip for the next time i know it doesn't help now. take a short extension and grind it flat. never had a problem taking a plug out after i made that tool. i have also welded nuts on to plugs and taken them out like that.

fill plug is regular socket; you are referring to drain plug

You know they sell those 10mm square adapters right?

It wouldn't come out. I almost rounded the plug out thankfully I didn't because I'm still using it. The seal just isn't as good as the original and now it leaks a little bit, nothing too series, but enough to mark up the driveway and garage! Went to the Chevy dealership and they told me that they discontinued the part so it looks like I'll have to do some digging at the junkyard. I was just wondering if anyone had found them somewhere online that sold them or had any ideas.

no i didn't know they sold a toolfor it. but i live in newfoundland we only got a princess auto here 4 or 5 years ago i've been modifying tools for year. my father tells me i'm like an old farm, he picks up a tool that is ground down or welded on and ask's what i made that for. haha when your in a place where there is alot of cheap tool stores you will make it to save a few dollars. and the fill plug on mine are 3/8" drive.

I'm thinking Fordem was referencing the 10mm square socket extensions you place on a 3/8" drive ratchet that fits snugly into the bungs so the bung plug won't become rounded out.  The bung openings are actually slightly larger than the 3/8" ratchets and are metric sized like the bungs.

You can also use teflon tape or liquid on the bungs to help seal them and ensure they don't seize in place.  They can be a a pain to remove when seized or when someone has used gorilla arms in the past to seat them.

yes i know what he was talking about. but if you can't get your hands on one of them you can grind the top of a 3/8" drive extension top down flat and it sits in the hole alot better. dosn't feel like it is going to pop out like a regular 3/8 drive when there is a bit of pressure on it. just thought that might help some one if they where in a jam trying to get one of these suckers out.

Grinding the top flat doesn't fix the problem, a 3/8 square drive is 0.5mm too small AND has rounded corners.

all i can say is try it. it worked for me i had one that was rounding out and poping out when pressure was apllied. i seen it wasn't siting deep enough so i grinded the ronded end on the extension flat and it came right out. if you don't like my idea i can undestand there are alot thing i don't agree with. but it has worked for me in the past and thought i would share my finding with people in a jam.
